EUGENE, Ore. - If this is Deron Williams' learning curve, he's going to be Albert Einstein by season's end. The Jazz rookie, cognizant that he needed to adjust his game to avoid fouls while retaining his aggressiveness, aced the point-guard midterm Thursday, helping Utah rout Portland, 92-73, on the University of Oregon's McArthur Court.
Fouls weren't important at all in this preseason laugher, at least not for Williams. The rookie played 21 minutes and was only whistled once. And it's not like he was simply avoiding contact - Williams drew at least five fouls on his opponents, including a couple on Sebastian Telfair, at the beginning of what could become an intriguing long-term rivalry.
Williams only had two assists but played markedly better after an eight-minute, three-foul stint against Steve Nash on Monday. "I thought he had better be motivated to play, because he didn't play very well the other night," Sloan said. "I thought he came right back at it. [He] came out tonight and stayed aggressive."

Deron Williams' introduction to the NBA was a little akin to asking a rocket scientist if he can program your VCR. Sure, he could get the job done — but what a headache! "Everybody in this league has talent," Sloan said. "But what is that, daily? Is that working hard every day? Is that knowing what's going on? Are you a good student of the game? That's a tremendous talent. "I think he has all those things." "A couple of times he (Williams) has gotten a little confused with (various options within the Jazz's primary offense set) — but he's fought right back in it and knows that he made a mistake. That's natural, but you'd like to get him comfortable where he doesn't have to think about those things. Obviously players that have a little more experience can read that a little quicker. But he's done just fine."

Other than the Bulls, Jazz, Rockets and Lakers, there is no other reason to watch the NBA, none.

he looked good in helping Utah to a 2-0 record...Derons line 18 minutes (off the bench) 10 points 4-8 FG 2-2 FT 0-1 3FG 1 reb 3 asst 3 TO 3 fouls...he isnt afraid to shoot but i think a year or two will give him the added confidence to take his game to the next level ... most of his minutes were in the 2nd half and Jerry Sloan stayed with him after Golden St went on a 10-2 run to pull within 6...he was 4-5 from the field at that point and missed his last 3 fga but showed great ball handling skills and movement without the ball in picking up some fouls on his defender

*note* ranks #11 in NBA 3pfg% (.571) ranks #T1 in ft% (1.00)

He is getting some touch fouls, a nba rite of passage for rookies, and certainly no cause for alarm

Derons ppg steadily climbing, currently at 12.3 with 3 apg unfortunately Chris Paul has played at a all-star level and is favored to win Rookie of the Year with 16 ppg 7 apg and 6 rebs both very impressive for NBA rookies and it certainly isnt over yet-alot of games left...and one thing Deron will always have is the head to head beatdown he laid on CP and Wake in taking the #1 rank..break it down Big Hit Buda

Also remember that Paul has alot more talent surrounded by him than Deron. However you spell Kirilenko...being injured, Boozer hasn't been able to play yet, ect. So Deron's assists will hurt a bit.

It is with great sadness that i report to you Deron was involved in a minor brush with the law. Following a game in Denver he and fellow Jazz rookie Robert "ex-thug" Whaleywere approached by a group of fans who were looking to fight and announced they didnt like the Jazz. Following an altercation in which Whaley's hand was cut (and he lied to the team about how it happened) police responded to the scene and both Robert and Deron gave fake names. They would not have been arrested for anything until they gave the fake names because the other side started the fight.

If I was a superstar in a crowded bar, I would probably lie low also (i.e. lie)

What he did, while I am sure it is against the law, is really a non-offense (in an ethical how to we interact with others type of way). It's not like his actions hurt anyone.

No way he goes to jail for this, probably a pretty big fine though. Definetly doesn't look good though.

huh sad.............. very sad..............i can't believe deron would be that stupid........... ahhh well it happens to the best of us. this season isn't really a new season anymore if you think about it........ it's just about living on "borrowed time" for the illini. this is just a continuation of last year to me. deron; i know he will do well; and he is very humble and respectful; but if a guy getrs up in your "grill" we will all turn violent. it's instinct. now lying to the police is not. i believe he should at least be fined for this or have a few hours of cummunity service; ONLY because he is a role model to children; and you don't want to teach them to lie. The only thing he did wrong in my eyes; was lie to the police.

no jail time; but he needs to make up for what he did; and i hope he feels better and guides the jazz to the playoffs............. he deserves it.

and all of us; we all love the guy. let's hope he admits his mistake

Great news. I was getting sick of all the Chris Paul slobbering. That kid is tearing it up, though.

What about Luther? He was the tenth man off the bench the other night and only played 6 minutes.

HEAD IS SICK WHEN T MAC ISNT HOGGING THE BALL. HE IS VERY PRODUCTIVE. I BELIEVE HE HAS THE HIGHEST SCORING OUTPUT BY A ROOKIE THIS YEAR IN A GAME. I THINK HE DROPPED 34 OR 36 AT ONE POINT.

Seriously? I know he's gotten decent minutes and he scores well and puts up pretty good assist numbers.
