College football is a simple game. It's not an easy game by any means, but it is simple and the formula for success is straightforward and well-known: (1) Bring in talent, (2) Develop that talent into football players, and (3) Win games with those football players. That may not be absolutely everything, but that is the gist of it, and it’s those three things that we pay our coaches the big bucks to do excellently.

In this article we are going to make things even simpler. We are going to focus on just one part of that formula: Player Development; Number (2); The ability of a coach to turn raw talent into football playing ability. What’s more, we are going to approach player development from the player’s perspective. We know, and the talent knows, what they can do for coach. Let's leave that aside for the moment and focus instead on the player's perspective: What can coach do for the talent? Where should a recruit go, and who should he play for, if he wants to maximize his development as a football player?

This article isn’t about recruiting, but it is part of what recruiting is about.
Jabari Parker’s already been tagged as the “next big thing” for some time now. The Chicago product and top recruit in the class of 2013 was the 2012 Gatorade national player of the year – as a junior – thanks to his impressive mix of size, skill and savvy.

Even better? By all accounts, he’s a humble kid, who stays grounded thanks to his family and faith. Good thing, too. He’s about to earn a much-higher profile after this week’s Sports Illustrated hits.

The “best high school player since LeBron James” places more than a little pressure on Parker’s 6-9 shoulders. SI reserves its cover for pros and the occasional phenom. (Bryce Harper was one a few years ago.) To associate his name with LeBron ensures everyone’s already high expectations for Parker rise even more among hoopheads.

This is why the death penalty needs to go away

Wrong man was executed in Texas, probe says

He was the spitting image of the killer, had the same first name and was near the scene of the crime at the fateful hour: Carlos DeLuna paid the ultimate price and was executed in place of someone else in Texas in 1989, a report out Tuesday found.

http://news.yahoo.com/wrong-man-exec...051125159.html

Cameron Todd Willingham

Since Willingham's execution, persistent questions have been raised as to the accuracy of the forensic evidence used in the conviction; specifically, whether it can be proven that an accelerant (such as the lighter fluid mentioned above) was used to start the fatal fire.[30] Fire investigator Gerald L. Hurst reviewed the case documents, including the trial transcriptions and an hour-long videotape of the aftermath of the fire scene. Hurst said in December 2004 that "There's nothing to suggest to any reasonable arson investigator that this was an arson fire. It was just a fire."[13]
In June 2009 the State of Texas ordered an unprecedented[citation needed] re-examination of the case. In August 2009, eighteen years after the fire and five years after Willingham's execution, a report conducted by Dr. Craig Beyler, hired by the Texas Forensic Science Commission to review the case, found that "a finding of arson could not be sustained". Beyler said that key testimony from a fire marshal at Willingham's trial was "hardly consistent with a scientific mind-set and is more characteristic of mystics or psychics".[1][2]

Make no mistake: This coaching search was not pretty. Illinois AD Mike Thomas was dead set on VCUs Shaka Smart until Smart made clear the interest was far from mutual. Thomas, urged on by two board of trustees members concerned about the school's historic lack of an African-American head coach in either football or men's basketball, reached out to a handful of African-American candidates (Washington's Lorenzo Romar and Alabama's Anthony Grant, among others) who proved just as uninterested as Smart. When Thomas eventually abandoned that plan -- as well as a moon-shot hope of luring Butler coach Brad Stevens -- he snared Ohio coach John Groce, fresh off leading his 13th-seeded Ohio Bobcats to the Sweet 16.

Some Illinois fans looked at the search and Groce's three-year record at Ohio (which included a 34-30 mark in the MAC) as proof their program wasn't nearly as sought after as they once believed. But despite the follies of the journey, the Illini arrived at an entirely acceptable destination. Groce hails from the well-respected Xavier and Ohio State coaching tree -- former OSU national player of the year Evan Turner tweeted his approval almost immediately -- and the Bobcats' key player in last season's Ohio run was D.J. Cooper, a Chicago native. If Groce can extend that familiarity with the tricky Chicago recruiting scene into something resembling a pipeline, Illinois will have no shortage of talent with which to establish itself as a yearly force in the Big Ten.
we are super excited. the house is exactly what we wanted. 3 bedroom? check. at least 2 car garage? check. 2 bathroom? check. basement(unfinished for now)? check. small enough yard to be able to easily mow? check. nice deck in the backyard? check.

Im particulary excited about the heated 2 and a half car garage. oh and the upstairs room that is perfect for a man cave. and will be a future project(like in a year), but finishing the basement to make that the man cave with a ping pong table. will have the ping pong table though before the basement is finished, since if we got the house the ping pong table was my birthday present from my wife this year(birthday was 5 days ago).

And for those who want to avoid big cities, smaller college towns remain a great alternative. Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, is fourth; Durham, North Carolina, fifth; Gainesville, Florida, sixth; Ithaca, New York, seventh; Ann Arbor, Michigan eighth; Boulder, Colorado, 14th; and Ames, Iowa, 25th. College towns like these have highly-skilled, resilient economies. And they are great hold-over places for new grads thinking about their next move, whether it's the job market or on to grad school.
The data, updated for 2011, are based on the revenue and expense reports collected from more than 225 public schools in the NCAA's Division I that have an obligation to release the data (the NCAA does not release the data publicly). The others are private or are covered under a state exemption.

The best way to use the data is to compare a school's expenses over time to see how they have changed. Because the categories are standardized, comparisons between schools are possible as well. The school's president or chancellor reviews the data before it's submitted to the NCAA, which also does a general audit of the data. In an effort to standardize reporting, NCAA staff members have worked with the National Association of College and University Business Officers for formulate definitions for each category. Still, some schools interpret the reporting rules slightly differently.
Citing temporary decals and logos that may cause players to slip, the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Rules Committees are recommending a rules change that requires the court be “of a consistent surface” so student-athlete safety is not compromised.

The committees believe most surfaces already are in compliance, but no rule exists requiring a consistent surface. In some cases, temporary decals can create a difference on the floor that may cause players to lose their footing.
All rules proposal must be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel, which is scheduled to meet via conference call June 12.
"He has embraced that role by getting on campus whenever there is a big visit weekend, reaching out to other recruits and keeping the current class connected and close," Farrell said.

It might be working already for Illinois. Since Bailey made his decision, four other players have picked the Illini. Including Belleville Althoff defensive lineman Merrick Jackson, who had offers from Iowa, Missouri and others.

Bailey is trying. But he won't be pushy. As he found out in his own recruitment, the decision belongs to the player and his family.

"If that's not their school, it's not their school," Bailey said. "But if it is, I'll try to help out the best way I can."

Before reading the article, I was somewhat surprised about using a search firm. However, a key issue is the nature of the contract and, evidently, universities are not adept at creating coaching contracts, as evidenced by the $$$ Weber walked away with even though he got a new position.
The university called on Parker Executive Search to help hire John Groce in March — the same firm that helped recruit Thomas for the athletic director's job last summer. Parker was paid a total of $182,183 for the two searches — a $90,000 fee for each, plus expenses. . . . The basketball search lasted just three weeks — compared with almost three months for the athletic director's search — but the university did not ask for a discount in the firm's $90,000 fee. High-profile coaching searches move rapidly, so the work is just packed into a tighter time frame, Parks said.
