Forbes: Pac-10 to become the Pac-12

The Pacific 10 will rebrand itself as the Pacific 12, conference commissioner Larry Scott tells Forbes. A formal announcement is scheduled for later this afternoon at a midtown Manhattan hotel.

When will the name change take effect? Ironically, you'll have to ask the Big XII. That's because the Pac-10 isn't sure when the University of Colorado, one of the two schools that agreed to join the conference in recent months, will officially come aboard. Colorado planned to make the transition in 2012, but the Big XII, its current conference, wants the school to leave sooner. The University of Utah, the other incoming Pac-10 member, is still on track to join the conference next year. Scott says that the name change will be made official only after the two schools make the switch.

The Big Ten Conference, which will also grow to 12 members with the addition of Nebraska in 2011, is expected to keep its current name.

And the Big Ten will remain the Big Ten even with 11,12,14, or 16 schools. Just like the Big East will remain the Big East even though it expands to the South and Midwest.

They can do this: there isn't another conference that will suddenly go out and grab the name "Pac Ten".

Tbe Big Eight, Big Ten and Big 12 don't have that luxury. JMHO.

They should get ahead of the curve and rebrand it to "Pac-X", where x is the integer value that maximizes the conferences profit.

I wouldn't want a team in my conference that didn't want to be there, plus they (along with the P10(12)) were part of the reason NU left as fast as they did.

This puts the Big 12 in a bit of a pickle. Of course they want to move ahead with the 10 team schedule. But they want to collect the full penalty from Nebraska and Colorado. Colorado can refuse to leave and thereby negotiate away the departure penalty. But if they do that, my guess is that Nebraska has a very good case to get out of jail free as well. At the end of the day, I doubt very much that either school pays anything close to the full penalty.
