Well, then, I guess its a good thing we avoided the endzones like the plague at times last year so it wouldn't look worse...

I think it is. If you follow the link and enlarge the picture there is a slight difference every five yards. It's not a drastic, but it does seem to be different shades of green.

yes, the alternating green "stripes" on the field are subtle, yet noticeable. not as dramatic as some ive seen.

GHD
from that pic, I estimate at least 50ft from sideline of field to brick wall. loooks like it is not quite 20 yards, but clearly more than 10 yards. thats my guess and I am in the construction industry.

There is a lot of real estate there that is wasted.

Yes, I estimated 50 feet for my earlier calculations, using aerial imagery. But the problem remains that we might only be able to lower the field ~6 feet, in which case you aren't going to be able to reduce that 50 foot gap by much, say 12 feet. It would be a slight improvement, and perhaps if we win enough games to sell out the place they will lower the field in 5-10 years.

I'm not a structural guy, but if you assume the stands are at a 30 degree rise (rough estimate), then you have a 1 foot rise to 3 foot run. Keep in mind they need a good amount of that space to move things around/in/out, but a 6 ft drop would mean an 18 foot horizontal change.

Guess this answers the end-zone question.

Good. The dramatic ones look stupid.

Maybe they'll make the ILLINOIS blue with a white outline.

tan(30 deg) = 0.58, not 0.33.

A 3 foot run for every 1 foot rise would give an angle of 18 degrees.

And if you extend the field as much as possible the current problem of poor visibility behind the players would still apply to the lowest seats.

I believe they normally lay out the entire endzone, sew it together, then cut out the portion which will be different colors and sew those fabrics in. Just because there is no wordmark there now doesn't mean they will paint it on over the orange for a year so they can change it next year.

A quick bit of online research suggests that a 1/3 rise/run is standard for aluminum bleachers... and appears to be the same gradient we have in our main stands (rough eyeball). If true, the actually angle for our main stands might be less than 20 degrees (18 degrees = 1/3 rise/run).

d = 50 feet * tan(18.4-15) = 3 feet

d = 50 feet * tan(20-10) = 9 feet

I'm starting to think we might have a 6 foot maximum drop (e.g. Oklahoma) at Memorial Stadium.

Hey guys,

I know this is probably a done deal, but we just wanted to throw out a mock-up we had for the new Memorial Stadium field

It takes cues from the new Assembly Hall basketball floor, and from the jersey concepts done by wILL-INI here.

To us, the issues we had with the current design are:
1. The orange in the endzones/sidelines isn't the same as the Block I (hopefully a mock bug)
2. The slanted "ILLINI" underlined isn't very visually appealing and is only used for our football team right now (hopefully the new jerseys will steer away from this design).

Looks good. I'd like to see the same design, but with the zig-zag also at the back of the endzones, framing "Fighting Illini" top and bottom.

The same friend who told me they'd be doing the alternating green on the field just told me new endzones will come NEXT year with the new scoreboard.

Wow, so just a 17.4 degree angle for the main stands. They really couldn't lower the field more than 4 feet, and even that would allow just 12.4 degrees for a fan to see over the row in front. I can see why they decided not to lower the field. If we had a lot of money sitting around, perhaps it would make sense to lower the field 3 feet just to make all of the current seats viable, but that is pretty big expense for a small payoff (no payoff given current attendance).

My photos from this afternoon.

It's subtle but you can definitely tell the different shades in the 5-yard segments of the new turf-

Cleaning up the exterior of the ramp tower facades?
