Tim Beckman explains "Only Orange" - The Illinois uniforms/helmet thread

I like the logo that is now going to be in the center of the field with the block I and the the state. I believe this logo would look pretty good on a helmet. I think this logo is even better than Nike's block I with the circle.

Some are concerned it makes us look too much like Indiana, since they do essentially the same thing. Others just don't like the look of it, plain and simple.

I think it could be cool if the Illini did a navy helmet with orange speckle in it. Kind of like Idaho's black and gold ones. Put white Illini on it or a big orange I and it could look pretty sweet.

Count me in on both, looks like Indiana and I just don't like it. I don't like the block I with or without the circle either. Want something with some flash.

Just wondering, what do you suggest then? There is no way that the slanted crap we have now is adequate. It could just say "ILLINI" in block letters. However, I just don't like a word on helmets. I think a logo is much cleaner looking and iconic. So what is left? This: . That isn't a good logo, especially on a helmet.

I say go with the Block I. No state outline. I like that logo at mid-field and mid-court, but I don't want to make it our primary logo.

BTW, Beckman told me #illini will wear blue jerseys on blue pants tomorrow (players' choice). Could see different helmets later this year

anybody watching the utah vs utah state game utah state has those matte finished helmets they look alright

I watched it. Their uniforms were simple but fine. The matte finish is about 2 years old as far as unis go. If you want to be a trendsetter you have to be up on what Oregon is putting out there because they are the flagship of Nike. Unfortunately they are trending to the chrome look which does Illinois no good at all.

I couldn't help but think about having a couple feathers like the Utes though.

The blue facemask makes the helmet logo more bearable.

I wonder if this is a one-time thing or whether we'll be sticking within. I hope the smothering we look like we're in for tonight doesn't affect the decision.

The Uni Watch blog pointed out that it looks like we are issuing helmet stickers this year. It was a little blurry, but the sticker appears to be the state of Illinois. What do we think?

P.S. imagine if we could have Chief stickers....

No one stated we would wear more orange. People heard "only orange" and ran with what it meant. It's just to identify and seperate us, a slogan. It has nothing to do with uniforms being predominantly orange.

That doesnt mean, at least how I read it, to mean we're going to wear an orange helmet with an orange face mask, orange jerseys with orange numbers, orange socks and shoes, etc. We're the only team in conference to wear orange, we can identify with that without going overboard.

Who said anything about going overboard? The point is, except for the helmets, the team has not worn orange at all.

It's on our jerseys, it's on our pants. IMO "only orange" never meant orange would be our main uniform color.

"We gave out - you'll see the state of Illinois on the backs of their helmets, they have stickers. The blue ones stand for football rewards and the white ones are for not being on a list. It's a reward for production. The white sticker on their helmet is for rewarding for doing what they're supposed to do. The goal is to get 12 white stickers - that means 12 weeks of doing things right, not being late to class or late for the training room or whatever. And they also get rewarded for the achievement they have on the football field."
