I hope they are quality recruits, but then I read stuff like this regarding Miguel Hermosillo: "In my opinion, he has more promise as a baseball player," [Ottawa Times Sports Editor] Tavegia said.

That's because he could get drafted in the top 10 rounds straight out of high school. Which is a 5 figure signing bonus.

Sometimes...only sometimes kids are really good at more than 1 sport. Not always and these days it is more rare than before but sometimes it happens.

But the those recruits this year arent beating any Big Ten teams or top 30 teams and dont look like they will this year.\

Please prove me wrong.

He likely will be a mid- to early-round draft pick in the amateur draft.
That is ridiculous baseball talent.

What Dayton said. It is more of a compliment to his baseball talent than an indictment of his football talent. I only hope he doesn't go through the baseball draft process because I have a feeling he could be the steal of our recruiting class in football (and sure would help out Illinois baseball, too!).

Think he meant the class that Beckman is trying to recruit right now. Looks like there could be some solid players that we sign this year.

best case scenario is that he gets drafted and plays football/attends classes on the MLB team's dime, which opens another scholly

I have a lot of respect for that kid. It would be real easy to bail right now.

Of course, I would tell him to take the money and run to the minor leagues. You'd have to be nuts to continue chasing the NFL if you have other great options as a professional athlete.

This is kind of my point though. All the talk of his baseball upside and talents and promise, but we are not recruiting him to play baseball, although maybe we should be. From that same article: "He's getting better with one-on-one matchups, but I'm not sure if he's good enough yet for Big-Ten caliber defenders." Hopefully he can get to that level.

No reason he can't use the football scholly yet still play on the baseball team. Kyle Hudson did. Others have done it, too.

Actually I'm pretty sure he is playing both.

He WILL be playing baseball as well. He has tremendous upside in both sports. He is a 5-tool guy in baseball. That doesn't mean he couldn't be a high-impact player in the Big Ten in football.

I think many of these kids were sold on the opportunity to play early and the fact that team is struggling, and showing very little depth, only reaffirms that early playing time promised to these kids. Good to see Spearman come out and say he is staying. He opens up a pipeline to a big time school.

Here is a good article on Martize Barr's JC team. Pretty impressive head coach and what they have done in 4 years.

A couple of notes:

*Deon Long is ridiculous.
*Barr is the 4th leading WR on the team. On a team that scores 69 points per game. So we'll see how he does at UI
*Rodney Coe plays DL and has 3 sacks and 6 TFL's so far.

Is deon long still going to Maryland? I thought I heard he was wavering a little bit?
