New scoreboards, video boards, ribbon displays and sound system for Memorial Stadium in 2013

How about a 2013 thread for news & info on the new Memorial Stadium scoreboard.

Asmussen with a new scoreboard nugget today-

In the spring and summer, Daktronics will install a new videoboard that is four times the size of the current model. And there's more. Three ribbon boards are being put in, along with a new sound system and two auxiliary videoboards..

"No matter where you are sitting in the stadium, you will be able to see down, distance and score."

The increased size of the scoreboard is obvious. Young said fans will also notice a major change in the sound quality at Memorial Stadium. Announcements will actually be heard in all corners of the building.

Size-wise, the new scoreboard will rank among the 20 largest in the country. There's a whole lot more room for signage, out-of-town scores, statistics, social media, you name it.

Story from September 6th, 2012-

The project calls for the main scoreboard, three ribbon displays on the west and east balconies, and under the scoreboard. Another, smaller display measuring about 16 by 9 feet, is planned to be installed on the north wall of the southeast tower.

The new scoreboard will measure 125 feet, 9.8 inches wide and 54 feet, 3.7 inches tall, compared with the current scoreboard size of 48 feet by 68 feet. It will include the usual information such as game time, scores, downs, distance, yards-to-go, timeouts and more.

"It'll be one of the largest boards in the country when it's completed," Brown said.

Did they photoshop the crowd in to make it look full?

The changes look/sound good. If anybody does show up for a game, the experience will be a little better. Hoepfully the product will improve too!

They had to be able to afford the screen somehow, tear it down and sell all the materials.

I think they need to do something with the student section at some point in the future. They're so far removed from the action, it's ridiculous. Hard for them to make any kind of an impact in terms of noise level solely by themselves.

Last football season, the members of Block-I got a chance to see some posters of the scoreboard so I figured I would post my pictures of them since they might be better quality and the second picture shows the reverse of the scoreboard. For comparision sake we were told that the current scoreboard is about as wide as the "Win, Win, Win" part on the new scoreboard.

Wow, I've never made it to a game there. Seems like a TON of space all the way around between the fans and the playing field! I can only reference it to ASU Sun Devil Stadium and The Murph in SD, (Jack Murphy Stadium, or as its known to newer Charger fans as Qualcom ) both of which I've been to many times, and the fans are much closer the field. I never really noticed that while watching on the tube. Is that typical of most stadiums in the B1G?

I guess when the Illini football teams hits the big time in a few years and need more seats they can always lower the field about 5 feet and then extend the seats downward another 10 rows!

Up until the late 70s or so, there was a track that was in place around the football field and the area between the south end of the field and the stands was used for some track things as well (this part I'm not as confident of).

Back in the early 20s when Memorial Stadium was built, track was still a pretty popular sport I believe (as was boxing and horse racing) and Illinois was a track power for years, although I'm not sure about that era. Now I'm not sure if or how many track meets they even have at home.

I think I built it up more in my head because I thought it'd be bit bigger. Regardless, it looks great!

Also it says there is gonna be 3 ribbon boards. Obviously 2 would go on East and West balconies, but what about the 3rd? Above the North End Zone?

The pricetag for the new scoreboard, three "ribbon" or scrolling-type of scoreboards on the east and west sides of the upper deck and under the scoreboard, plus a smaller display for fans who can't see the big one, is $6.7 million
