The Big Ten and Pac-10 end (sometimes, now) their respective college football season in Pasadena's Rose Bowl.

If Larry Scott and other have their way, that's the way the two conferences will start their seasons in the future as well.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Pac-10 and Rose Bowl officials are in the discussion stage regarding an annual game that would kickoff the college football season on the West Coast. Specifically, the two sides are looking at the possibility of pitting a school from the Pac-10 against a school from the Big Ten.

Commissioner Scott confirmed the discussions, but also warned that it's far from a done deal.

"The Pac-10 has a tradition of playing some really tough out-of-conference games early on," Scott said. "We love the Rose Bowl relationship. ...

"There's a lot to think through. I would only want to do it if it wouldn't tarnish what it means to play in the Rose Bowl. This is hallowed turf."

Don't know about you guys, but this women's tennis CEO-turned-commissioner is really starting to grow on me. I truly appreciate out-of-the-box thinking, especially when it involves potentially putting quality non-conference match-ups on the field and on our televisions.
Since they get the actual Rose Bowl in the midst of Pac Ten country, if we do the B10/P10 kickoff game, I want it in the midwest.

Also, the first game should be Nebraska vs. Colorado and after the game, they all give the middle finger to Dan Beebe.

Uh, shouldn't they be asking Delaney about this??

Since the two conferences have always cooperated (and historically, have put as much or more emphasis on academics as any other conference) I always thought it would be good to see some of the desert/SoCal schools come to the Midwest in September, and have a few of our schools play out there when it's cooler here. I know it could be a scheduling disaster in terms of a bowl preview, but still... you have to have at least one home-and-home, so why not??

Huh? The Huskers and Buffs wanted out of the B12 for their own reasons. Beebe wanted them to stay, and I understand has been helpful to both in this transition year for them, regardless of the feeling of fans in the conference toward them.

Most said, the conference was going to dissolve, and because of Beebe, its shorterm tenure is secure. As an ILLINI down here, I have no allegiance to the conference, but am glad from a college FB perspective, Beebe accomplished the impossible.

I agree that we shouldn't travel out west, let them come play in the midwest and enjoy our humidity .

I would not say that he saved the conf. The B-12 conf is no more - whatever it will end up - it is diminished and unstable at this time. there are 3 or 4 programs there now that know they were unwanted !

The TxTec coach got it right a mo or so ago when he said the Big 12 conf will not last now.

Short Term Tenure

Bugle:

Agree with you and the Tech coach, that is why I used short-term tenure to describe the future of the conference. But, who is to say, what the status will be next year or the years, thereafter?

But, I still believe, the credit for it existing today, goes to Beebe for being able to herd the Lions and the Kittens in the conference in the same direction to reach an agreement.

I like this idea. It gives the Pac 10 a chance to give a team that doesn't play in LA that year a big time game. I would also like to see a Pac 10 team come to Big 10 country. There is enough room to play 2 games that weekend, one here and one there.
