Still dumb. You'd think they would have incoproated a "12" somewhere in there. I guess PSU and Nebraska don't count.
You missed it completely!
That is not a 1 in place of the I.
However, the zero is in the G.
IT stands for the number of good logos with 12
and the number of good names for divisions
that they could come up with.

Listening to Tate on yesterday's HQ podcast and he mentioned when he talked to Delaney about it at one point, Delaney admitted they hadn't come up with anything they liked. I'm guessing, the more time that passed it was going to be harder to unveil something as simple as what some have suggested here. Frankly I don't care much either way, but I think they took what would have been a minor issue and turned it into a major PR issue, but no one will care after awhile.

The first one ignores basketball, as well as other sports, and looks like something out of a bad sports television show.

The second one's been down before (see Pac-10(2) and almost every professional sports logo)

The last one is just the Big Ten network logo which everyone complained about when it came out so I'm not sure how thats a better solution. I think the Big Ten network logo got ripped on this board last week too?

I honestly don't understand the uproar over the logo. It's a plain conference logo, big deal. Block letters, a hidden "10". It's fine.

The division names, on the other hand.... bad.

If we want to talk about bad logos, how about this lame, bland one:

The Illini need a new logo ASAP. And a new football helmet design.

Agree on both counts. It really hurts to lose the chief logo.

Big Ten to reconsider division names?

Quote:
Delany on Thursday acknowledged the negative reaction in an interview with WGN Radio in Chicago. The commissioner also for the first time acknowledged the possibility of re-evaluating the names and changing them in the near future.

"We've had enough experience with names and expansion and development of divisions that we know that you rarely get a 90 percent approval rating," Delany told WGN AM-720. "But to get a 90 percent non-approval rating was really surprising. It showed that we didn’t connect with our fans in a way that we wanted to. It’s humbling, to say the least, because we’re trying to build fan bases, not push them away.

"I've been around this business a long time, and I would say it’s one of the more surprising things. There’s a sensibility there that we did not connect with, did not read well."

Next time you pay your cable bill, think of how much the Big Ten paid some sort of marketing "guru" to come up with a decision that couldn't stand the daylight of FOUR DAYS.

I'm thinking they are going to come out looking pretty smart. They got all kinds of free pub for the new names. Now they will get that a second time. And, when they choose something uninspired, everyone will say, "at least it's better than Leaders and Legends." In the meantime, they continue to generate buzz without actually playing any games.

The "new coke" marketing strategy?

The Chief logo was really distinctive and, I personally thought, regal in a very good way.

The current UI logos are weak. It's hard to come up with something inspirational when we have no symbol. It just becomse letters arranged in certain ways.

As for the Big Ten logo, I like the middle one on the shield. Granted, it's typical, but the Big Ten epitomizes history and tradition. I'd go for something that has a solid, grass roots, bread basket kind of feel. I don't know if it's wise to try and sneak in a "10" or a "12" or whatever. To me, that just dilutes the impact.

It shouldn't be clever or cutesy in any way.

And, like most others, I think the division names are awful.

Big Ten may rethink Legends, Leaders

Big Ten may change division names

The new names haven't really grown as me as much as I thought they would. I wouldn't mind them changing the names to something more standard. I know they wanted to stand out, but I think they might have been reaching a bit with "legends" and "leaders."

Exactly. And we can see how the Coca Cola company has been crippled by that mistake.

So does anyone else think that "Black and Blue" now look a lot better by comparison? One syllable each, the old NFC central, bruises, tough football connotations... Then you could could also go with a black and dark blue big ten logo.

Illini blue of course, with an orange border outside around the logo
