Williams off the table, OU talking to Illinois' Weber

So where does OU go from here?

A well-placed college basketball source told the Transcript on Wednesday night that Illinois coach Bruce Weber has emerged as a viable candidate and there appears to be mutual interest.

Does Weber have the same agent as Painter?

When comparing Purdue and Illinois over the past couple of seasons, I don't think Weber has the same kind of leverage as Painter to bargain for a raise. Either way I can't see this going anywhere. Plus I can't remember how much Weber is making but I think he was already doing pretty well.

I hope this is nothing more than just rumors. I don't know how this would affect the incoming class and Weber has run a clean program

It's easy to see why Oklahoma finds Weber an attractive prospect: He's solid, clean, and an experienced head coach.

I am NOT happy about this. Bruce runs a good, clean program. I don't want him to leave.

"A well placed college basketball source"

Yeah...that carries a ton of weight at the moment. I think I'll give the words spoken by Weber himself yesterday just a little more weight.

Wow, did Klee have a heads up on this situation? I thought his statement in the chat today that Oklahoma was a more likely destination if Bruce were to leave as pure speculation just because the job is open.

I guess this, Tennessee, Oregon, and I would assume other overtures that never were made public kind of blow up the beliefs of some that Weber isn't an attractive coaching candidate for other major schools.

I couldn't find one single mention of Weber in soonerfans.com's "new coach" thread-

Could Joe C's search pass through Champaign, Ill?

Really, it makes more than a little sense.

From this vantage point, Joe Castiglione appears to be missing on BCS conference-type targets. If he isn't getting Buzz Williams or Lon Kruger, Weber, at the very least, presents a more proven alternative to Wichita State's Gregg Marshall or North Texas' Johnny Jones.

Weber appears to be a tad uncomfortable at Illinois. In mid-February, when the Illini seemed destined to miss the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years, Illinois athletic director Ron Guenther was compelled to make a statement supporting Weber. He also hinted at staff changes, telling Illinois newspapers: "You can't be loyal to a fault."

Highly skeptical of this report, but I should say this: BW does not want to let any of his staff go, and he is extremely loyal to them. He also feels like he never has gotten a fair shake from donors, fans and the media. And the last 2 years took a LOT out of him. Pushing and prodding this year's seniors the last 2 years taxed him. Greatly.

That said, I'd be stunned if he left for OU.

I've seen people mentioning Klee. Can you show me where you see this?

The word "weber" wasn't used once in the past 2 weeks on the soonerfans message board.

Klee's chat today-
Quote:
Kenny- Thanks. He would get a call from Purdue. Whether that is a serious overture is another matter. But his family likes it at Illinois, his daughters are nearby in C-U and St. Louis, he loves the personality of his 2011 recruiting class and he said yesterday he hopes to finish his career at Illinois. Those are some reasons why not. But it is a legitimate question, and we appreciate it. I can tell you the Oklahoma opening would be a greater possibility than Purdue. Klee

They would rather Weber to the Witcha St coach, even though he is a good coach

Dan Roan said tonight on WGN news that Weber has already spoken to OU twice regarding the position. Sounds like this could be serious.

I hope whoever would be doing the hiring at UI has Brad Stevens and Shaka Smart on speed dial....

If this is going to happen as in Weber leaving one way or another it needs to happen now. First because of lack of recruits committed for the future nobody would be decommiting except maybe Langford. If he did the new coach would have two scholarships to play with next year, and have two years to work with the loaded classes of 2013 2014. It possible recruiting might have peaked for Bruce and with future studs Paul Richmond and Head with NBA dreams the talent level might take a hit quickly. It might be time for something new and fresh for Illinois Mens basketball

Imagine BW and Self facing each other every season. That'd be fun to watch.
