Per a suggestion, I'm starting this thread.

I don't know what to say other than that we're likely to be horrible. But at least we'll get the amusement of watching Cabrera try to man 3rd base 19 times this season.

Luckily the division is horrible. I suspect we finish 82-80.

I'm looking for better efforts from Dunn (literally the worst season in the history of baseball) and Danks, but that won't be enough to compensate for what Williams has done to this organization over the past several seasons.

Am I too pessimistic?

You are right to be pessimistic, but Dunn seems to be doing ok right now...pitching is still a major concern. I already miss Buehrle. Going to be a very long season, I'm afraid. Also seems that Bobby Jenks is in real trouble...DUI this morning

80 wins? That is pretty on par if not a little optimistic. I am going 75 wins.

But we get 19 games against each of the Twins and Indians. The Royals will be better, but it will take until next season for them to be legit. I mean, they were horrible last year and won 79 I think. I figure they are about the same this season.

Dunn hit 2 bombs the other day, giving him 4 on the spring.

The Sox need him to regain his form. To say last year was a disaster would be a very large understatement.

It could very well be a down year for us.. But for the time being I am gonna remain positive.. Way i look at it is Dunn, Rios, And Peavy are all like free agent signings bc I don't think that literally none of the three can be worse than they were last year!! Let's not forget just a year ago today we were the consensus pre season division champ.. Really the only downgrades are Quentin for Dayan ( which hopefully Dayan lives up to the hype and he could put up bigger numbers than Q.. And the other is obviously beurhle not bring on the bump on openeing day =(.. Don't get me wrong we will miss mark and his innings but Chris Sale is a flat out filthy stud.. And from what I'm hearing Hector Santigo has looked GREAT this spring and could slide in as another lefty in the pen to help replace the loss of sale.

Who do you all want to be the closer??

I'm hopin we go with Reed from the start

I'm not sold on Sale. I think he'll be fine, but more of a 4/5 starter than the stud you seem to think he is.

As for closer, it has to be Reed right? That being said - I hate the closer position. Reed should be used in all situations where the game is on the line. 1 run lead with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 7th? Bring in Reed. Getting 3 outs with the bases empty in the 9th is a much easier proposition.

Finally, I have my days where like you I am optimistic. But usually, I find it hard to envision how we'll compete with the Tigers. They're just better at most positions. The only chance the Sox really have is if they get career years from Beckham, Rios, Floyd and Danks along with decent to good years from Konerko, Peavy and Alexei. It's a lot to ask. Then again, asking Jose Contreras to pitch like a Cy Young winner was a lot to ask for in 2005.

Hopefully the 2012 Tigers take the likes of the 2008 Tigers and 2011 White Sox. In 08 they acquired Cabrera and Dontrelle and finished in last. We all know the 2011 White Sox story.

Absolutely true. And we've already seen it's likely Cabrera gets hurt playing third. Given his weight, no one would be surprised if Prince got hurt.....or even stuck, unable to get through the door of his house. Verlander can't be that good again. Fister will take a step back. So yes, there's a chance. It's why I'm always excited at the end of March - even when I know the Sox should not stand a chance.

I think 80 wins is pretty optimistic. I have little faith in KW anymore. I like Ventura a lot, but hiring him with no previous managing experience looked like desperation. It has been mostly downhill since the '05 WS under KW. He stuck us with two very high priced players that aren't producing much, Rios and Peavy. I do like a few of the young players such as Sale, Reed and Morel.

Beckham is a huge disappointment. I thought he might be a franchise changing player when he first came up. He's looking more and more like a major bust.

I hope I'm wrong and Robin can get the guys to play as a team and get the most out of the talent he has to work with.

How many people miss Ozzie already? I dunno, but I'm kinda disappointed he saved his all-time Ozzie-ism for Miami, ya think? Who knows, maybe it's just his way to butter up Fidel to get another starter...

That is what happens with Ozzie. I think there is a bit of over-reaction from everyone on this. He says stupid things, but it's not as if he was supporting the Castro government. On top of that, he's a baseball manager - does it really matter in the scheme of things what he says?

On another note, good performance by Sale last night. 6.2 innings. Gave up only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. Any time the hits + walks = Ks, it's a good outing. I don't expect this to be the norm, but if he can keep the walks down, he'll have a surprisingly good year....at least surprising to me.

AWESOME performance by Sale. I thought our starting pitching did OK against a dangerous Texas line up. Starting 2-2 has me slightly optimistic.

I read this on another board (non-Illini related) so TIFWIW:

The 10 runs scored by the Rangers against the White Sox matches their lowest 3-game series total from last year in a series played at home.

Ozzie Guillen suspended for 5 games

I'm so glad this guy is no longer in Chicago. And I'm not even a Sox fan.

Morel's line from the game yesterday

0-3, 1 BB, 3 Runs Scored:laugh:. I love when things like that happen.

Peavy vs. Scherzer

It will be interesting to see what Peavy can do against that Detroit lineup. And Scherzer is a decent strikeout pitcher. These Sox need to put the ball in play to test that horrible defense.

Enjoy the game. It's on you to bring home the win.

From the highlights Peavy looked good. Nice movement, good command. If he can give us 25 starts this year we'll be alright. Nice to see Viciedo get his first of the year. And AJ with a triple! It's early but the team seems much different than recent teams. More aggressive, but in the right spots. Nice start to the season.

Yes, Peavy looked awesome. My concern with him is injuries. If he stays healthy enough to get 25 or so starts he will contribute many wins this season. Good defense, particularly Viciedo's catch and the Rameriz-Beckham-Konerko double play in the 8th. I agree the team attitude seems much improved.

Perfect game for Phil Humber as Sox win 4-0! 21st perfect game in MLB history and 3rd for a White Sox pitcher.

That was a shocker, even to him. Of the 21 perfect games in history, three have been South Siders. Quite a stat.

Not a bad way of getting himself in the record book with a single day's work! There are many outstanding pitchers who never threw a perfect game.

It's rare for teams to have a perfect game much less more than one. The Yankees are the only other team with three perfect games with one being the only perfect game in the World Series. It looks like only CWS, NYY, Oakland, Cleveland, and Philadelphia have multiple perfect games. One thing surprising is that the Red Sox only have one perfect game (makes sense that this one perfect game was pitched by Cy Young).

With the Indians and Tigers having lost, sox are currently in first place. Never thought they would be there this late in year. Going to the game tonight to support Mr Perfect (snow boots will be worn as temp suppose to be in low 40's)
