Liriano it is.
I don't know what we can expect from him, but Sale clearly needs a rest so the depth if nothing else is important. And, although I think we could have gotten him for less, we really didn't give up too much. You'd have to figure he's the number 4 in the playoff rotation if the Sox make it there. Not bad for that spot in the rotation. He's equally capable of getting shelled and striking out 10. Hopefully Cooper can work the same kind of magic he has time and time again with re-treads. |

I'll call the debate over Dempster a draw
.In the end the Cubs get Villanueva who was #100 on the Baseball America top prospect list and a guy who will likely be in the bullpen at some point. Not the A-level prospect that AHS and others were certain would be coming back. Of course, they did have a trade in place for a better prospect with Atlanta that Dempster vetoed. They got much more for Malholm than Dempster. Of course, in retrospect this should have been predictable. Rentals no longer bring back prospects, thus teams are unlikely to give up great prospects for guys they'll only have for a couple of months. |

Nice win last night. Sox now a season's best 11 games over and Rios is actually out-performing his salary

Yes, Rios is having a terrific season. Check out the article about him at "South Side Sox" today. I am going to recant my early season criticism of Kenny W. I'm still not convinced he his anywhere near being the best General Manager in the league, but his moves this season have been very good, if not excellent. The team is starting to play very well at home, which was not the case for the first couple of months.

Doubt that we are able to pull away from Detroit, so think this will be a race to the wire, but it sure is nice to see the Sox on top of the Division. Honestly, when they first made it to first place, I thought "Well, that's nice. At least they GOT there." Now they act like they've moved in and redecorated. As that goofy Hawk would say "Don't stop now, boys !!"

We have the Royals for 3 both home and away, the A's (at home, thank god, play like crap on the left coast), Blue Jays, Yankees, Mariners and Orioles. Better make hay in August. Probably September isn't so friendly. |

Starting a new week, up 2.0 on the Tigers.
Let's see, we have the Blue Jays and then the Royals. Detroit has the Twins, followed by the O's. Where do you think things stand next Monday morning? I say we go 4-3, while Tigers go 4-2, so we're only up 1.5 |

Predicting .5 up. I don't see good things in Toronto or KC and Paulie is out

I keep waiting for Quintana to blow up and he keeps impressing me. Simply amazing. I don't know what has surprised me more, Quintana or Rios's great season.

Quintana has been very surprising. Seems to have come out of nowhere. Rios has had parts of seasons in the past of playing very well, followed by periods of very ineffectual play. He has been much more consistent this year and is playing extremely well on both offense and defense. Maybe moving him back to his original position of right field has helped.

Absolutely! This time of year I'm usually chomping at the bit for football to start up. I still am, but at least I have a first place team to root for in the meantime. I don't watch many regular season games, but I'll actively search for some September national broadcasts becaues it looks like the Sox are in it until the end this year. As a casual baseball fan (or any fan), you can't ask for a lot more than a September with meaning.

What in the world is it about the Royals. The Royals? Good grief.

With the way baseball (and this team) works, i can see us taking 2 out of 3 against one of the best teams in baseball this week (NYY). Sox recovered from road trip in Bos and Detroit and will recover from this one. But jeez, just get one of the them and we're 3 up in the loss column still. FRUSTRATING

OK, so I got lucky last week and called for a 1.5 game lead today.
I'll risk it all and play double or nothing to see what everyone thinks about this week. . We play 3 against the Yankees and 3 against the Mariners, all at home. Tigers have the 3 against the Blue Jays, 3 against the Angels, also all at home. I'm going to say its all a wash, we start next week still leading by the same 1.5 games. Your guess? |

Certainly a good win, but it makes the losses to the Royals all the more frustrating. And while beating the Yanks is nice, I'd much rather take care of the Tigers, Twins, Indians and Royals. Own the division and go to the playoffs.
