I can confirm reports that #Mizzou assistant Isaac Chew will be the lead assistant on John Groce's staff at Illinois. More coming later.

Wow! How did Groce pull that one off? One year as an assistant with Haith and Groce was able to convince him to come to IL??? Groce continues to impress. |

I love this hire. Makes up for the loss of Jerrance in a big way. He was the lead recruiter for MU on Malcolm Hill, Kendrick Nunn, Okafor, and Paul White. |

That is significant. Groce really must be trying to convince Nunn at the least to come here. How interested was Okafor in MU anyway?

All the people that were complaining about the Chicago guys on the coaching staff.. with Chew on board now and if Deon is indeed brough on for DOBO, that should put an end to all of those complaints.. The John Groce era could not be off to a better start

Another thing that puts Chew ahead of Jerrance is that Chew is very very familiar with the style of play Groce likes.. as he was an assistant at Murray State and Missouri

Sad to see Jerrance Howard go but I honestly do think he has much brighter days ahead of himself in his recruiting efforts. For those of you worried about losing an insider to the Chicago recruiting area, do not feel too down. Let me break it down like this. Chew was pivotal in bringing in the newfound talent at Murray St. which has enjoyed much success the past 2 years. Also, he has developed relationships in the KS city area which only expands our recruiting network, but the real kicker is, he played high school ball in Chicago. Jerrance is a very likeable guy and was able to develop a network later in life because he's really a central Illinois guy (peoria). When recruiting Chicago, it is a lot easier if you either come with a bag of money or are seen as one of their own, i.e. went to high school there. Chicago is a h.s. city and where you went to high school and who you knew from that time period means a great deal to people trusting you. It's almost like a good ole boys club. |

On paper, Chew looks like a terrific hire. But was Missouri seriously in the running for Okafor, White or Nunn?

I think this is a major positive.

Developing relationships in Chicago is obviously doable with some guys (Nunn, etc.) but I'm sure it doesn't always work out that well. Having a CPL guy sounds like a big advantage. |

Even if Mizzouri wasn't really in the running, it at least gives Groce a head start on Okafor and White -- they could have liked Chew but had minimal interest in Mizzouri (and hopefully more if he's at UI).

Considering the circumstances I would say Chew has done a really nice job recruiting and getting players out of Chicago to be interested in Mizzou. There's been articles that stated that Mike Anderson completely stopped recruiting Chicago and that they had almost no presence in the state. Chew came in late and was able to quickly stir up interest. Malcolm Hill and his parents also said some really nice things about Isaac Chew during their recruitment.

Sounds like a very good staff for the Illini!
