A few months ago, he got Jahlil Okafor, Russell Woods, Sterling Brown, Kyle Davis, Xavier Taylor, & Josh Cunnigham to visit Nebraska. Those are the names I remember off the top of my head. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Technically he doesn't have any commitments because he's not an assistant coach and holds an administrative position with Nebraska. He was instrumental in bringing Jermaine Morgan to CSU.

The question is, who could he realistically deliver from the fire to Illinois?

I like Ron Coleman. Did some great things at Whitney Young, and with the Fire. Big concern that he went from Sophomore coach to college assistant at CSU in one year. Not a lot of college experience, not a long track record of landing chicago guys

I like his recent ties to both the Fire program and Whitney Young. He's also trained NBA players such as Shawn Marion, working with him the previous season before he won his title with the Mavs. Seems like he would help us with both recruiting and player development.

Very true, but he has a tremendous upside. We already have two solid assistant's in Ford and Williams. I would love to see Groce take a chance and go with Coleman. I know being a Chicago guy is a bit overrated, but it certainly can't hurt having those types of connections.

Again great guy really good with wy soph. team but J.Morgan never had the grades to play in hs. Those fire kids the ones that Nebraska offered beside Sterling Brown non of those guys can play in the Big Ten. Jahlil is out of the question for them. Coleman has a close relationship with the Fire that's good but everybody in the Chicago doesn't play for that Club team. We need a guy who can reach out to all the programs, which is why i stood behind my original candidate. Parham

But there is a good chance we could sign Davis without Coleman.

I agree he's been all over it, but he's also said the candidates have been calling him and it's not a Mike Thomas or Dustin Ford or Jamal Walker or Paul Klee thing, it's a John Groce thing. I think Klee has by far the best relationship with the staff of anyone providing info, but I just think Groce is keeping this one somewhat close to the vest.

I feel like if he makes this hire, he's assessed that it will either A) Give him a legitimate shot at Okafor or Cliff (I doubt Parker cares much) B) Locks up Kyle Davis or Schilling (and he must really want them). If he doesn't give a lot in that way, it would be tough to pick him over Robinson, Deon or Paris in my view. |

That's my mistake. I didn't do my research and just assumed he was an asst.

Hard to tell at this point but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt with everyone we're going after. My guess is that it could really help with guys like Sterling Brown and Gavin Schilling. Who knows what impact it could make with Jabari Parker and Okafor.

Maybe instead of "No way", it becomes "No thanks."

+1. Very skeptical that any asst hire would sway a JP or JO or Alexander to UI. Besides, JG's #1 criteria for assts seems to be coaching skills. This is based on what I've been told about his emphasis on player development. Chew was probably hired for recruiting ability and connections more than anything, but JW and DF are both very good teachers (I'm told) who excel at instructing players and helping them develop the skills they need to perform in JG's system. They're also both teachers who emphasize the positive (JW more so than DF, who's more reserved, I'm told, but still similar philosophies to JG). They also are both young enough to relate to the players at some level.
I'm sure JG will hire an asst who can recruit -- that's a must. But I'd be surprised if he hires someone who doesn't have experience or a solid handle on player instruction and probably scouting and game prep, too. |

If Chin can't land one of the big fish, I don't see the point of this hire.

That seems like an awful high bar for any hire. If he can teach, get along with Groce, evaluate talent, and recruit, I'd be fine with it.
