Made the trip to Cincy for today's game. A friend had great seats behind Reds dugout. It was my first trip to the park, nice, but no Busch Stadium. Chapman was only throwing in the mid 90s but still untouchable. Won this first series against a strong Reds squad. Time to head back home and get those rings!

Ruh, Roh (Lance Berkman)

Per Joe Strauss of the Post-Dispatch (via Twitter), Puma is going to have an MRI of his lower left leg done today. He had an MRI of his lower left leg just before he landed on the D.L. in 2009. In Joe’s words, Lance was “less than upbeat Wednesday”.

Gah, why didn't he know Freese was going to hit a home run the next at bat so there was no need to leg out a triple?

When the ball ricocheted off the wall away from the fielder (Bruce?) I knew Lance was going to try for third and it wasn't going to be a good thing. (Either he would be thrown out or pull something.)

Good opening day ceremony. Terrible start, can't stomach to watch anymore, so hopefully they do better when I don't watch. Also, hope they have a better start tomorrow when I'm at the game.

I expect him to be on and off for about half the season before he is completely over the injury.

Good game today. Lynn's looking great. Was a hard game to prepare for clothes wise. Needed a hoodie for the early rain, but by game time it was getting hot. Really wish I had shorts by that point. I was starting to burn up.

The 2011 St. Louis Cardinals World Series Championship rings each have 103 round diamonds with a total weight of 2.62 carats.

The rings are made of 14K white gold with 50 custom-cut rubies: 28 rubies make up the "STL" on one side, eight to make the "11" (signifying the teams 11th World Series win) on the other and 14 rubies compose the cardinal sitting on a 14K yellow gold bat on top of the ring.

The carved words "World" and "Champions" are set to hover over groupings of the diamonds. When you have that many diamonds on a ring, you have to find space where ever you can. One side of the ring, includes the player's name and jersey number and the rally squirrel makes an appearance. You have to squint to see the sliver of him as if in full stride and streaking across the space just above the home plate emblem, of course.

Yep. Good game. Sure hope Westbrook comes through tomorrow -- Cards need that one as well!

My son's soccer tournament in St. Louis was cancelled so he and I went over a picked up tickets for the game today. It turned out to be a fantastic day. I thought it was really cool that they had all the old-timers introduced and presented with championship rings as well. I don't know if that is common, but it was very classy.

Lynn would have had a shutout if Furcal hadn't bobbled a sure double play ball. He was very mad at himself. It's always good to beat the Cubs.

Freese and Berkman out again today, but may be available to pinch hit. Berkman expected to play on Tuesday against the Reds, and hopeful Freese will be ready too. Definitely need those two cause our lineup isn't quite so threatening without those two.

cards have an exciting team this year. looks like the organization is strong from top to bottom. Matheny is doing great, but no surprise. A healthy '12 cards team will be a strong cards team.

It is only the bottom of the 7th so it is a little early but I will take 2 out of 3 every time.

Larry Underwood is a baseball historian & Cardinal fan that has published a couple of books. He maintains a blog titled “Cardinal Rules: The Way Things Ought to Be in Cardinal Nation and Beyond”. Yesterday's entry is a terrific reminder of how lucky we are to be Cardinal fans.

When the 2012 season draws to a conclusion, Mike Matheny's "lack of experience" will have proven to be a non-issue. He'll be in St Louis for a long time; his "experienced" counterparts in Boston and Miami won't fare so well, I suspect.

I was skeptical about Matheny, but there's in no way in hell I would have wanted Bobby Valentine as manager. He's just an arrogant no-talent douche. If it wasn't for his gig with ESPN last year I really doubt he would've been given any consideration for the Red Sox job.

That is very similar to my opinion. I may not have been quite as skeptical about Matheny, as he would have been my second choice of the guys that were actually interviewed, but I would have given the job to Ryne Sandberg, who has had terrific success in the minors, including Manager of the Year honors. I heard he had a fantastic interview as well.

However, I would have cringed big time if the Cardinals had pursued Valentine.

i actually was all for the Cards going after Valentine because of his no nonsense attitude and his teaching ability...especially for the young guys that I thought lacked under Tony. But at the same time...you know what you are getting with Valentine...a loud mouth blowhard.

In hindsight...I'm glad Matheny has the job and Valentine doesn't...but I have to admit I was one person who thought Valentine in St. Louis would of been a good thing.

If StL would have selected Bobby I would have taken a sabbatical and followed another team for a while. (not really but I would have been tempted.)

I could have done what my uncle did back in 1956 when StL traded Red Schoendienst. He gave up on the Cardinals for trading one of the 5 Untouchables. He went to the newspaper and picked the team in last place. The Pirates. The season wouldn't have started but since Houston is going to the AL and I could follow the Cubs I too could have ended up with the Pirates. Scary. I guess I owe Matheny a debt of gratitude.

Hoping for a sweep as well, but even more importantly, I hope Waino has a good start. If the Cards get him going, this could be a really fun season!!!
