SMU expect decision from Larry Brown in days, sources say

Another source said that Brown has looked at possibly hiring former Illinois assistant Jerence Howard. But a source connected to Howard said no deal is done.

Wow.

Snacks learning under the wandering grand master of roundball might be a great career move for him.

He seems to got the recruiting down, now this would really help his X & O's game.

Given Brown's track record and age, as an SMU assistant Howard might have the opportunity to become head coach there in not too many seasons.

LOL. Mid way through the season I suggested this exact scenario for Illinois as an option to those who thought JH should be hired as coach at UI. This would be a great option for JH and the Illini. Much better than him assisting at Depaul.

Agreed. I really think he can do much better than DePaul.

And far better for Illinois should he land at SMU. If he's at DePaul, Kansus, or Kentucky, he potentially competes much more directly with us and hurts us more. But SMU? That would be a nice alternative for our program.

Would seem like a good stop for him. You know the head coach won't be there long and will probably empower him with a lot of work that he wouldn't get under other coaches.

Texas not perhaps his perfect spot, but you get everything you want.

What conference is SMU in these days?

SMU is currently in Conference USA, but the school is trying to make the jump to the Big XII. That would be hilarious because Jerrance Howard would be recruiting against Self, Weber, and Kruger.

They're moving to the Big East in 2013.

I thought SMU was moving to the Big East soon?

Wow, I'm WAY behind in my conference-realignment information! But who can keep up with this stuff? Of course SMU is joining the Big East. Geographically, it's a perfect fit. Given the fact that the Big East is adding SanDiego State, Boise State, and SMU, they can no longer lay claim to the term "East." Perhaps they should simply call the conference "The Big."

People who live in conferences with 12 teams and ten in the conference name shouldn't be too critical.

I love the fact that the Big Ten has twelve teams and the Big XII has ten teams.

And further, he already has in-roads in Chicago and the mid-west so it would be great for Snacks to develop recruiting connections in a whole new region should he ever end up back home here at UI at some point.

Former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard is also expected to join Brown's staff along with former Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland. Howard is regarded as one of the country's top recruiters. Strickland has spent the last two years on John Calipari's staff in an administrative role. Strickland was a first-round pick out of DePaul in 1998 and played in the NBA until 2005.

Miss print by ESPN. Rod played at DePaul in the mid 80's.

Pretty good gig for Jerrance. Gets to work with one of the best coaches ever, develop new connections, SMU will be moving to the Big East.

Interesting move by Brown. Can he build SMU into a typical Larry Brown team at his age?

Jerrance to SMU

Before the SMU job surfaced, the 31-year-old Howard was close to joining Weber's staff at Kansas State. He also had spoken with Memphis and DePaul about jobs that are open or could become open. Howard was informed last week he wouldn't be retained on John Groce's staff at Illinois.

Instead, Howard will join Brown in Dallas. The move is attractive for several reasons. One, he can step outside the Illini bubble and expand his coaching contacts. Two, SMU figures to spend big on its new basketball staff as it prepares for a move to the Big East. Howard also aspires to be a head coach, and learning under a Hall of Famer can't hurt that cause. Brown is the only coach to win an NCAA and NBA championship.
