I wonder if there is a tie breaker for eight place? There are four or five teams tied for 8th.

They play one more round today. I am not sure what they do if they have a team tie after that.

Here's the tiebreak procedure:

Tiebreaking Procedures
Team ties shall be broken by a sudden-death playoff counting the low four scores
relative to par on each hole. Play shall continue with new scoring on each successive
hole until a winner is determined. The games committee will determine the starting
holes. If a playoff involves more than two teams, a shotgun format shall be used. The
team playoff will be conducted first, with the playoff for individual spots to follow
immediately after the conclusion of the team playoff. Once the shotgun sudden-death
format is started, that format shall be used until a winner is determined.

Having a shotgun start could mean some luck involved if your team is unlucky and has to start on a tough hole.

Back to the Illini, great job today and for the tournament it's impressive they've been able to do so well considering they really only have 4 guys who are competing. Though that will hurt their chances if they are able to move on to match play.

he is now at -6 thru 10 holes and has a 2 shot lead over two others...the team, however, is seriously lagging and they are out of contention for the final 8 and match play....luke guthrie has especially disappointed...

Illinois player has won at -5, unless a couple of players still on the course birdie all of their last 5 or 6 holes.

Team in 21st place. Horrible final day.

Well, I'm sure it's a little tough to enjoy things with a bad last day for the team, but unless someone goes crazy to finish out their day, it'll be a heck of a good night!

I'm a little late to this party, but it is really incredible that an Illini player has won two of the last three individual titles.

The fact that Pieters won and the team didn't even make the final round is surprising. Still, a great year even if the very end was disappointing.

Well, the problem is you have to count 4 scores from 5 players. Illinois has 2 very good players in Pieters and Guthrie. but not much depth. That's what kept them from advancing, not Pieters.

Obviously Pieters didn't hurt them. My point was that they had enough depth to win the BT Tourney and advance in the NCAA, but fell of the table in the NCAA. I'm not familiar with the roster enough to know what they have coming back. Any idea what their prospects are for next year?

Illinois has done pretty well in non-revenue sports this year.

I think that may be understating it a bit, but you are right. We'd all like to see the revenue sports get better which will only help the non-rev sports going forward.

Right, but winning the B1G doesn't take nearly as much. The top 25-30 programs are nearly all southern/western programs, it's a different level when you get to the NCAAs. They didn't really "fall of the table" as much as the lower end of the lineup couldn't keep up with the other top teams.

We only lose Guthrie, which is a lot since he's one of the best ever to play for Illinois. But we'll have Pieters and Jacobs back as veterans, Brian Campbell played well down the stretch as a true frosh. They add a couple of really good recruits including another kid from Belgium who may be higher ranked than Pieters was. I believe he's in the top 10 in the world. And another of the recruits is in the top 50. If Pieters stays for his SR season, that team could be pretty good and have enough depth to really make a run.

Thomas Pieters Wins 2012 NCAA Individual Golf Title at Riviera

University of Illinois sophomore Thomas Pieters fired an even-par 71 Thursday at Riviera Country Club to win the 2012 NCAA Championship by three shots with a 54-hole total of 208 (-5). The Nijlen, Belgium, native becomes the second Fighting Illini golfer to claim the individual NCAA title in the last three years, joining 2010 champion Scott Langley, who was the first in school history. Pieters also garnered the Arnold Palmer Award presented by Callaway for earning medalist honors and picked up PING first-team All-America honors, giving Illinois a first teamer for the third-straight year.

"It feels great and finally sank in once everyone got done out on the course," Pieters said. "The whole week was pretty solid. I hit a lot of fairways and greens again today. My mindset was to make a lot of pars and let other people make mistakes. Coach always tells me that if you play a steady round of golf, you won't have a lot of people finishing in front of you. I was disappointed we didn't make it to match play, but all my teammates are really happy for me, so it's pretty exciting."

Men's gymnastics, men's golf, and volleyball did not disappoint this year. Great way to close out the season with yet another Illinois national champ!

I wouldn't "close" it yet, Andrew Riley is one of the favorites in the 110m hurdles, an event he's won before.

Related topic, DA Points and Scott Langley qualified for the US Open yesterday. Mike Small, Thomas Pieters, Brian Campbell and Zach Barlow didn't make it, Pieters was the first alternate at the Glen Ellyn location. Luke Guthrie makes his attempt today in Memphis as that site was rained out yesterday. Luke also makes his pro debut at the St Jude PGA event this weekend.

Coach Small was getting some major props on the Golf Channel's Morning Drive Show this am. Two NCAA champs in last three years plus his own playing ability had them both raving about Mike. Said he's building a powerhouse program in a northern state. Was great to hear it.

Congrats on your first PGA Paycheck, Luke! I am guessing you won't be framing that one.

Points missed the cut, but Langley has gone 76-70-70 and is hanging in there. 70-70 is one of the best 36 hole totals the last two days. And of course Mr. Stricker is in there as well, with 76-68-73.

Guthrie doing well at the John Deere Classic. Of course, this is Stricker's tournament to lose, as always

looking forward to two ex-illini far ahead of everyone else battling for the title on Sunday.

Stricker and Guthrie finish T5, great job by Luke - best round of the day with a 64. I'm sure Steve is disappointed the way he finished, but he had a great run at this event.
