Emanuel pitches Goodell on holding the Super Bowl at Soldier Field

Quote:
Mayor Rahm Emanuel met privately Thursday with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to pitch Chicago and Soldier Field as the site for a future, outdoor Super Bowl.

The NFL is scheduled to hold its first outdoor Super Bowl in a cold weather city — New York — in 2014.

Goodell told the mayor that, if all goes well in New York, he would consider holding the game at Soldier Field.

With the exception of the typical Chicago weather for the last week of January/first week of February, why is this a bad thing for Chicago? I'm sure the downtown businesses wouldn't mind the temporary boost in sales for that week...

First time its below 40 will be the last time they try that. Players won't care a lot, but fans, especially folks paying thousands for seats at the SB, will.

I would absolutely love the Super Bowl to come to Chicago. It's a bummer we've missed out on so much - Final Fours, Bowl Games, etc. - but the problem is Soldier Field. It's brand new, but it's tiny. They could have done a much better job with it, IMO.

A repeat in Indy is more likely.

Isn't the playing surface bad by professional standards or did they resurface in recent years?

This is exactly why the "new" Soldier Field was such an incredibly idiotic move. Anybody with a brain in their head, and maybe some that didn't, saw this coming and this is exactly why the new Soldier Field should not have been built. It is an architectural nightmare, the smallest stadium in the NFL and only good for the NFL home games and a few mega concerts a year.

Millions were spent on a brand new stadium that can't host conventions, concerts, Final Fours, Super Bowls, etc. Those that suggest that a real new stadium wasn't built in order to appease Wirtz and Reinsdorf may be right.

This was Daley at his worst.

And a retractable roof maybe should have been considered.
