One B1G Year Later

We didn't take over. We thought we'd take over, but we didn't. Maybe we did in volleyball, but in every other sport.... I mean, Northwestern, really..?

In football, not everybody is three yards and a cloud of dust. I think from top to bottom, the Big Ten is much stronger at the bottom than some other conferences. But as someone who ripped Big Ten football in the past, the top isn't at the same level as the other conferences. Hopefully Nebraska can get there before the rest of the schools.

They need to get back into the AAU so as not to be the academic embarrassment of the conference... Take over?

Did they really think it would be that easy? Lots of arrogance going on there.

Exactly. I lived in PA at the time PSU joined, and their delusional fan base was convinced that:
1) they would consistently run the table in football
2) the only reason that the move to the Big10 was a plus for them was that they would develop into a national power in basketball.

Then reality set in and they found out that playing a Big10 schedule isn't the same as building a schedule around 2 big games a year and then "rounding out" your schedule with 9 games against the likes of Temple, Rutgers, Maryland, Syracuse, etc.

Oh yeah, and the basketball thing? Not so much.

I found it funny that the one guy brought up baseball. Nebraska finished fourth in the conference after their coach was complaining about no one in the conference being committed to baseball. Oh and they lost a series at Northwestern.

Quote from Jon on Corn Nation regarding academics: "The University of Nebraska is a member of the Big Ten. That's huge for academics. That's enormous for the university. Nebraska couldn't have purchased that much cache' with anything, but by joining the Big Ten, the university gets the prestige. Does that mean it's a better university just because it's in the Big Ten? No. But it means that it has to uphold a certain standard. And it means that avenues are open for Nebraska that weren't before in terms of research and resources."

As CT3 noted above, if Nebraska really wants to "purchase that much cache", they could start by getting themselves readmitted to the AAU. They were the first University in the 111-year history of the AAU to be voted out. If that had happened before the BigTen agreed to accept them into the conference, I'm not sure that they would have been allowed to join.

PSU won the conference their second year...I'd say that arrogance was rather deserved.

...and they're in a tie with OSU for having the most disgraced coaches and administrators.

I don't count RichRod as he was only disgraced by W/L record.

If only this board could hear what my cousins from Arkansas say about the B1G. The common sentiment of SEC country is "What a joke!"

In football, I have to agree with your cousins. In other sports and academics, not so much.

You mean those conference championships in 2005 and 2008?

I'm far from a PSU fan, but to deny that they've got a fantastic football history because of the Sandusky scandal is a bit myopic. Now they have a tainted history of fantastic football.

Winning one outright title and sharing two in a 20 year period is hardly justification for any kind of arrogance. Northwestern has that same number of titles in the same period of time.

In Arkansas, there are no other sports and academics is one of those yankee words they don't use

with todays B1G setup, with teams playing such different schedules, it indeed will be interesting to see how long it takes Neb to win a football title. Might take awhile.

Overall, they have to be very very happy to have made the move. Was a better move for them than it was for the B1G, but I am fine with it. We needed a 12th, and they are way better than Mizzou.

So 1 title and 2 shared in 19 year is "dominating" the league?

And a straw man, I said nothing about that.

PSU has averaged 5 wins and 3 losses in their 19 years, with the 1 outright and 2 shared championships mentioned above. They have a strong program, but their record is a far cry from what their fans predicted they would do in the Big Ten. They have arguably as arrogant a fan base as any, certainly in the Big Ten, and their myopic behaivor and regard for Paterno in the face of the horrific scandal that was unfolding in front of them was disgusting and a disgrace.

They did, by 1 game, and without having to play here at Illinois (while we had to play in Lincoln). But they were knocked out early in the NCAA tourney as well where we obviously had the runner-up run.

You know how I know these guys are witty and smart? They made that "Rose Bowel" joke four times in two paragraphs.
