Deron Williams has reached agreement on a 5 year, $100 million extension with Brooklyn, a league source tells Y! Sports.

Deron Williams just tweeted a Nets logo on his twitter account, and said "Made a tough decision today." Sources confirm he's told Nets.

Huge coup for Nets, who have dealt with a lot of star rejection the past two years. Billy King's gamble to trade for Williams has paid off.

As they say, Deron Williams first reported the story.

If Brooklyn can't cut deal with Orlando for Dwight Howard, strong possibility it'll move to keep forward Kris Humphries, source tells Y!

Had the Nets lost out on Deron Williams, they were prepared to make a run at Goran Dragic with a $9 million a year offer, sources tell Y!

Hopefully the Joe Johnson and Dwight trades go down so he can finally have some good guys around him with the Nets.

I'd love to see him with Dwight. Johnson's a nice start.

Wow, internet Mavs fans are REALLY throwing tantrums over this.

That's what happens when a fans don't realize their team (their good team) is on a down swing. Hopes that the stars will flock in and save them for cheap get dashed... and spectacularly so. It's a good decision to avoid those kind of expectations and get blamed for a rough patch that seems worse than it is. Too bad it was his hometown he had to say no to.

In the end, good on Deron - build a good franchise in a big market. Cool.

Is it even financially possible for the Nets to take on another salary over 10 million?

Between Williams, Wallace, and Johnson thats about 52 million on 3 players and i'm pretty sure the salary cap is around 70 million

Likely not, as this article details:
http://nba-point-forward.si.com/2012...dwight-howard/

I have to wonder why the Nets invested a max contract in an aging Joe Johnson, and didn't make a harder push for Howard. I'm sure there are good reasons (like they didn't have enough to offer Orlando, and didn't want to wait around for a potential deal), but did the Nets just become the new Atlanta Hawks? I guess it's an improvement from the last 3 years!

Hate to be pessimistic, but Deron may again be resigned to obscurity without enough surrounding pieces to make him relevant in the playoffs. A shame for such a competitive winner.

Even if they could swing just Howard they would be contenders with the right role players around them. Hope it happens.

I'm pretty sure if Dwight hadn't messed this up, DWill and Dwight would have both signed with Dallas this summer.

I'd be livid too were I a Mavs fan.

And I think that would have been really fun! But I'm not going to fault DWill for not trundling home to a solo gig with insanely high expectations.

I am eager to see what the Nets can do, assuing Joe doesn't fall to pieces 20 games in.

Can we turn this into the NBA offseason thread?

It looks like Steve Nash is headed to LA. If the Lakers are able to get Howard, Kobe might be able to vie for his 6th ring this season. I personally hope the Nets are able to land Howard. I'm not sure if it's possible, though. Joe Johnson's contract is huge, and Williams just signed a decent contract. Not sure how much room they have to work with, plus they're not a particularly deep team.

There's been a lot of talk today that the Lakers are better off keeping both Gasol and Bynum than going for Howard, which does make some sense.

Given the Nets limited room to manuever at this point, I think this puts a new spin on the Howard situation. Say for the sake of argument that the Nets can't pull it off financially and that the Lakers are content to stand pat now that they have Nash. Given that Howard wants to go to a contender, where does that leave him? Bulls...?

I've been on the Howard to the Bulls train since Christmas. The Bulls need another star and it'd be the 1 guy in the entire league that the Heat has no answer for.

I think he reconsiders the Lakers and ultimately will end up there.

I think the two teams talked about most for Howard right now are the Lakers and the Hawks. I can't see his situation in ATL being significantly better in ATL than ORL. Considering they lost Johnson, and would likely have to give up Horford and/or Smith to get Howard, they likely would not be a contender. There's been rumors (or maybe Howard has stated it publicly, idk) that Howard doesn't want to play with Kobe. Idk if going to NJ is a possibility. While I think it's a long shot, there is a chance he settles in Chicago.
