Why would he take classes at ASU? He's ineligible to play college basketball correct?

A quest for knowledge? A realization he may not have the opportunity again? Mingling with 15,000 coeds? Not a bad place to spend the winter.

Maybe he wants to hang out with the Illinois fans who come out to the desert for the football game on September 8th. /TEAL

Does Arizona have looser laws with regard to cannabis?

ASU seems like a good place to get far away from any bad influences that currently exist in his life.

Maybe. But if Im trying to cleanup my life going to a college campus 1000 miles away and within earshot of Mexico is not the move I make.

On another note, some rec league team just lined up 3-4 years of dominance!

So Jereme Richmond can get away from Jereme Richmond by moving to Arizona? I honestly don't know of any other "bad influences" in Richmond's life.

Amen. Moving away from his parents and running off to a party school doesn't exactly sound like a good idea to me.

Hard to say what will happen. Obviously, being where he was wasn't working out well, so maybe a bigger change in scenery will do him good. Party school or not, folks in the Southwest are much different from the Midwest. I wouldn't say that makes me optimistic, but I don't have to be to hope for the best for the guy.

Good point. This also is a sad reminder of how JR squandered a special talent for basketball that could have helped him carve out a great career and set himself and his family up for many years of financial security. After JR made the McD's A-A team, no one would have guessed that 2 1/2 years later he would be enrolling at ASU as a regular student after 1 up-and-down year at UI, going undrafted, getting arrested and playing a season of semipro ball. Hope he straightens out his life but will depend more on an internal change of heart than changing his outside environment.

Out of state school, thousands of miles away from home, how is he paying for all this? Hmmm

Probably smart to go out of state. He is likely on probation and a minor fraction (even possession) in the state of Illinois will revoke the deal he got and likely send him to jail. If the same infraction were to occur outside of the state, no one here would know about it.

What exactly are you suggesting? I would assume he is either getting financial aid, or his parents are paying for it, or maybe he has a job lined up to pay for it.

OK, how many positive influences do you know in Jereme's life? Is it difficult for you to imagine that his "friends", the people he grew up with and trusts, you know, like the guy he was arrested with, might be a bad influence?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he's made plenty of terrible decisions on his own. But if he's stuck in a place that constantly leads him to making bad choices, a change of scenery can be a nice tool to assist him in getting his life back together.

Jereme made plenty of mistakes during his time here and immediately afterwards, but I am still rooting for the kid to turn it around. IMO this is a good start. I hope this works out for him.

From what I've seen Richmond has been a bad influence on others, not vice versa. Richmond had a ton of positive influences during his time in Champaign, and still screwed up (repeatedly). The Illini coaches thought that getting him out of Chicago and into a cocoon of mentors in a much smaller town would work. It didn't. Simply put, I don't think the place leads him to make bad decisions.

Yes, he has made plenty of terrible decisions in the last couple years. And I don't think his location/environment directly led to those bad decisions. From the looks of it, Richmond is simply a bad decision maker. A change of scenery won't change that; only he can change that. He's only two years removed from high school and he's already squandered a potentially lucrative basketball career. Now, he's back in college paying his own way. This guy has dug himself a hole that he needs to get out of. He's going to be thinking about his bad decisions for the rest of his life, wondering what he could have and might have been as a ballplayer. I might sound like a hater here, but the guy has put himself in a tough position. Only he is to blame here.
