Former Champaign Central High School basketball standout Verdell Jones III pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol last week on the eve of his departure for Greece to begin his professional basketball career.

Jones, 23, who listed an address in the 2400 block of Hampshire Drive, Champaign, was arrested by an Illinois State trooper in Champaign in the early morning hours of Sept. 2.

There are loads of transgressions posted on these threads (see the Jereme Richmond thread), but I'm not sure posting someone's personal address is really appropriate.

He's 23, and publishing the details of someone's address is common in arrest reports/police blotters. They only with hold that stuff if it's a minor. Besides, Dan only linked to a News-Gazette article; not like he looked it up and posted it himself.

Right. Plus the link says '2400 block'.....that's not an address.

Tell that to the writer in the Gazette.

Get a first time DUI and you get a slap on the wrist. Can't imagine why they continue to happen over and over again.

Yep.

Your first one messes with your wallet. You have to get two before your life starts to become affected.

Your license is suspended for a year for your first DUI, and that's after the initial suspension just for blowing over .08 (not necessarily a conviction)

I'd say that's a life being affected.

I'm still not sure why I'm supposed to care about Verdell Jones getting a DUI.

Why are you reading and posting in a thread you don't care about?

Similar question: Why was an article about a former IU player on this forum?

I was shocked when I saw this thread, I went to high school with Verdell and he's a bright kid with a great family.

None of that stops you from making really poor choices when it comes to alcohol. Chances are, he's a really nice guy, but his fatal flaw is an inability to control himself/handle alcohol. In those instances, it is usually better to just stop drinking all together.

Note: I'm not inferring that he's an alcoholic. While alcoholism is a definite problem, there are plenty of people who make the boneheaded move of drinking and driving without that particular disease. I'm just saying, if you've been caught once drinking and driving, maybe it's time to just ride the bus to the bar, at the very least.

Perhaps, but I'm speaking as someone who had a very close friend end up with a DUI. I'm just grateful he didn't kill himself or someone else. While my friend still drinks, he never, ever, gets behind the wheel of a car after drinking. He just doesn't trust himself anymore.

That's what I'm talking about. I'm not saying quit drinking off the bat (I don't know his personal situation, or that answer may change), but I am saying perhaps he should seriously consider never getting behind the wheel after drinking again.

Also, you took the quote slightly out of context. I'm not assuming anything about someone I don't know personally, hence the word "Chances" being used before the quote you pulled.

The night before he leaves for his professional career VJ gets a DUI. Bad luck or did someone intentionally call the cops on him? I'm not sure but is a .16 completely, fall down intoxicated? I'd dare to say we have all had that extra drink that puts us in that are we drunk or not state. Maybe, bars should have breathalyzers we can use before we leave? He must of had three mixed drinks instead of two. I'm not going to demonize this kid because it wasn't in the middle of the afternoon but 3a.m. plus its his first offense. I know it only takes one time to make a mistake you will regret forever. I also realize there are innocent people traveling at 3 a.m. and he could have hurt them. He didn't but to act like this kid has no class because one incident is a stretch.

If you are happy this happened to a young man it doesn't surprise me with how people enjoy others failing/misery. It's just the world we live in. VJ might just be a despicable person who treats everyone like they're nothing and feels like he super human. I never got that feeling when watchign him play. Honestly, he seemed like a leader who worked hard all the time on the court. One thing is for sure it killed IU to lose him at the end of his senioir season even if Hoosier fans hated him.

Everyone is different with regards to how intoxicated they seem at certain BAC's. but .16 is pretty high. It's not astronomical though. When I got one I was higher than that... I take full responsibility for the mistake I made and yes if there were steeper punishments I probably never would have in the first place, but to judge someone off of a first DWI...

Come on people, if he does it again then he is open for judgement you have no idea what the circumstances were the night he was arrested.

I disagree. So - the first time someone gets drunk at a .12 and hits and kills 2 people.... I don't need to know the circumstances and how / why / who / etc. It is what it is. I am just thankful that no one got hurt.

Agreed.

I sort of hate for my first post to be on this topic. Oh well.

I have done the breathalyzer as a test a couple times. I blew well over .08 which shocked me because I had relatively little to drink and I felt fine. Now I am afraid to have more than one drink before I drive. I guess that was a good lesson. Frankly -- and maybe this is wrong -- I feel pretty safe to drive with three drinks in a couple of hours but it would really mess my life up to get a DUI. I would encourage everybody to do the breathalyzer as a test.
