Future looks bright -- two freshmen and a sophomore in the line-up to begin the season.

And Luke Guthrie wins his first tournament on the web.com tour to secure his PGA tour card for next season:

Bravo! Seems that pretty much all the non-revenue sports are doing well on the men's side these days (and most of them on the women's, too!). Golf and gymnastics leading the way!

great win for Luke, set a tourney record @ 22 under. And now he's won almost as much cash on the web.com tour as he has on the PGA tour this season.

Watched the end on the Golf Channel, had a nice interview afterwards, too. Local news highlights:

Guthrie to balance golf, school for rest of season

"Since exhausting his college eligibility in June, Guthrie has posted five top 10s in six starts on the Web.com Tour and three top-20 finishes on the PGA Tour, as well. After beginning the season ranked 1,401st in the world ranking, he is now 175th."

Stricker wins the Payne Stewart Award

ATLANTA -- Steve Stricker, a player respected for his attitude, determination and approach as a champion both on and off the golf course, has been named the 2012 winner of the Payne Stewart Award. Stricker will be honored during a private reception this evening as part of the festivities at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, the culminating event of the FedExCup Playoffs. Stricker is in the tournament field this week, having survived the three previous Playoff events thus far that allow only the top 30 players on TOUR the chance at competing for the TOUR Championship trophy and, ultimately, the FedExCup title. He is ranked No. 13 in the FedExCup standings.

The Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to a player sharing Stewart's respect for the traditions of the game, his commitment to uphold the game's heritage of charitable support and his professional and meticulous presentation of himself and the sport through his dress and conduct. Stewart, an 11-time winner on the PGA TOUR and World Golf Hall of Fame member, died tragically the week of the TOUR Championship in 1999.

"This award means a great deal to the players on the PGA TOUR, and I am truly grateful to be the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award," said Stricker. "I take great pride in being recognized for the values that the Payne Stewart Award stands for. I was fortunate enough to spend time with and compete against Payne, and I watched how he handled himself on the course, with his fellow competitors, with the fans and volunteers. I hope that by leading by example, just as Payne did, that our younger players will follow in the traditions of sportsmanship, integrity and charitable efforts that he helped bring to our sport."

One more win and he gets the in-season promotion to the PGA Tour, not that there's much of a season left. He's already got an exemption into the Fry's Open anyway.

"There are times in a career as a sports writer when you witness someone or a team that is special.

"I’ve covered the WNB Golf Classic at Midland Country Club off-and-on for eight years, the last three as the main writer, and I’ve seen some pretty good players and pretty good golf ...

"But what Luke Guthrie did this weekend and has been doing on the Web.com Tour over the last two months is something that’s special and those who were there - and there weren’t as many as there should be - saw a future golf star."

What a start to a PGA career! Amazing what he's accomplished this year. Looking forward to Luke winning more on the big show next year.

And another tournament win for Illinois men's golf team

It looks like the team may be even better this year without Guthrie. Last year, they didn't have much depth and had to count some really high scores. This year, at least three of the freshmen are already contributing (Detry and Danielson) or appear ready to contribute (Kim).

Illini not doing well in their own event at Olympia Fields, currently in 11th place. But there's a good reason, the two Thomases are not playing, Pieters and Detry are in Turkey at a world team amateur event representing Belgium. The good news is Campbell and Burge are doing pretty well. Bad news is 5th year senior Jacobs is having a rough go.

Finished T10. Not great, but without the two Belgians, can't expect much. Danielson looks like he could be a talent and Kim and Campbell can be solid contributors. Not sure what's up with Jacobs, he's much better than what he's shown in this event.

Belgium is tied for 39th after the first round.

Pieters shot even par, Detry shot 5 over. Looks like the USA has a powerhouse team with US Am champ Steven Fox along with Justin Thomas and Chris Williams.

Good research. At least the Belgians are kicking Iran and Pakistan's butts.

Isleworth Invitational started today, Illinois playing 3 true frosh and a soph, in 3rd place after the first round. Thomas Pieters isn't in the lineup, wonder if he's under the weather?

Illinois makes a big move at Isleworth Collegiate

"Illinois, No. 32 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, is in second place, just three shots behind No. 1 Cal, which is seeking its fifth consecutive victory to start the season. Illinois is contending in spite of the absence of NCAA champion Thomas Pieters, who is sitting out the event after playing the World Amateur Team Championship."

Isleworth Final Results

Unfortunately, the Illinois men's golf team kind of imploded over the last four holes and finished 5th (out of 15 teams) today.

It was still a good result, overall, but after being +4 with four holes to go, they finished +12 and got passed by Alabama and Texas.
