Beckman: La Tech offense not complicated, just runs its system very well. Averaging 56 ppg.

Beckman: Reilly O'Toole has performed well, progressed a lot from Arizona State to Charleston Southern games.

Beckman: Defense has chance to prove itself against high-powered La Tech offense.

Beckman hopes to take several #illini to Urbana-Centennial game Friday. Awaiting NCAA approval.

Scheelhaase wore red jersey at #illini practice Tuesday, so no difference in contact than O'Toole.

Wearing the red jersey has to be a good sign right?

So, does Nate start? I guess we'll know at gametime.

So according to Beatty, CSU stacked the box to keep us from running. From my viewing of the game, while they did cheat an extra guy into the box a lot of the time, it wasn't as if they were leaving CB isolated in man coverage with no safety help for most of the game. C'mon, we have to be able to get physical with a bad FCS defense.

Well, Donovonn Young cost us a lot of running yardage trying to put on his Superman cape and bounce inside runs outside in an attempt to hit home runs. That's not his game, and not usually his attitude. Maybe he thought CSU was so bad it wouldn't matter.

I do agree with you. But, one thing I noticed is they did sell out to the run once they read run. See the Jon Davis TD. Which also brings up the point of why not more play action pass?? While we threw a lot there wasn't a lot of PA involved especially if you are going to point out that they were stacking the box (which wasn't true).

The bottom line is this: Until Dami Ayoola inexplicably turned a 1 yard dive into a 28-yard TD run with 3 minutes to go in the 1st half, our offense had ONE TD drive against a woefully over matched defense. We had control of the game because our defense completely dominated, but we aren't going to get the ball 7 times in the first half against good teams and we can't count on the D giving us the ball on the opponents 7-yard-line every game.

Something has to change. If we are just taking what they are giving, why can't we move the ball consistently and score against a terrible FCS team? Where is the misdirection, play action, moving the ball around, giving teams difficult looks, etc??? More importantly, where the heck is the blocking? Sometimes I think they keep it very simple because the coaches have no confidence in the OL being able to hold blocks long enough for play action and misdirection to develop.

Hopefully the change is a healthy Scheelhaase. If he can run and create, I think it will help the offense. His running will take advantage of La Techs poor LB core.

I'm with you. I guess we'll find out more Saturday.

Without a doubt, Scheelhaase can create some offense on his own. But to be successful in the long run, we also need the OL to create some offense.
