I've seen several people ask about news in the recruiting thread about, you know, recruiting, only for it to get lost behind Twitter talk.
I would like to make a thread on the merits of Twitter and using it to communicate with recruits. I think that following recruits is ok, and I think responding to them when they ask questions (like best fan base) is ok. I don't see any point to tweet them random silly statements, though it does seem the recruits do seem to enjoy that. How do you guys feel? PS- Not everything a recruit says on Twitter is about Illinois Basketball. You guys all need to stop being so paranoid when a recruit says something to the lines of "feeling disrespected". There are a million things that could mean. Stop reading into things so much. |

Personally, I have no problem with Illini fans following recruits. But posing direct questions to them and Tweeting for them to pick Illinois is creepy, immature, dorky and gives the impression that Illini fans don't have a life.
Also, in the DJ recruitment and coaching search last spring, we all read way too much into Tweets. Plus, a lot of us were gullible regarding so-called "insiders" knowledge of the situation. I think it would probably be best if Twitter was not used as a way to gain information about recruiting, since so much of what's on there is bogus. |

This is a pretty basic question: are there rules in place for peope communicating with a recruit?
For boosters and unviersity reprentatives, I think the answer is a clear "yes". Therefore, they fall under restrictions and potential violations. What does the fine print say exactly? I have no clue never having read the NCAA Rules and Regulations myself. Yet, I am supremely confident there are restrictions on this type of communication based upon my general knowledge of them. For average joes, I am saying it is fair game for anyone. People can be friends with whoever they want to, and the NCAA is powerless to regulate such behavior. This is why some compliance departments already have monitors for this type of communication conduct with their staff. If a known booster or university representative friends someone on Twitter and excessively tries to communicate with them, that is a potential violation. Yes. I realize this is way out of hand, but technology has gotten out of hand too. Coaches should not be held to the fire for behavior of rouge individusls in this day and age of wireless 24/7 digital communication. Still, they should be in the know about it. That is why compliance departments that monitor this form of communication are way ahread of the curve. |

I think this anti-twitter propaganda is being masterminded by people on this board who don't like twitter and are jealous because they don't have as many followers as some of us....or Brandon Lloyd following them (like me

Twitter is so misunderstood, mainly by those who are completely out-of-the-loop as to what Twitter is all about.
I've used it as a fantasy football owner/radio show ( @FF101 and @Sports101on1450 ) host for a wealth of information...over 6000 tweets. It has also been invaluable in making contacts and getting guests. The misconception is that Twitter is for the under-40 crowd. Not so. I'll be 53 in December and enjoy it thoroughly. It's entirely up to the user as to what he/she gets out of it. |
