Fans injured in bad wreck at Daytona

I hope the talk of a fatality in the stands isn't true, but unfortunately it wouldn't completely surprise me with a crash like that. Even with everything that NASCAR is doing to constantly improve safety for drivers and fans alike, an unforeseeable crash like this will happen to shed light on where further improvements need to be made. That 32 car got airborne and hit the catch fence head on, which tore a hole in the fence and tore the entire front end off the car, up to the firewall. After the crash, the 32's engine was actually sitting just inside the fence on the spectator side. I know that some kind of safety improvements will come out of this wreck, but right now the most important thing is making sure all the fans are alright. Again, I really hope that the rumor of a fatality isn't true.

Reuters reporting 2 fans are critically injured, but no fatalities as of now.

None of the news/sports outlets are reporting a fatality on their websites, so hopefully this is just a rumor. It's also very fortunate that this happened in an area with a lot of empty seats. Had that area been filled it could have been so much worse.

Every year there is talk about "the big one" at the restrictor plate tracks, and this one came on the final lap. Very sad.

Edit--I have to take that back--I thought I saw a picture of an area with a lot of empty seats, but that area was quite full....

According to Facebook chatter, 1 of the critically injured is a child.

14 year old according to espn, another older gentleman had head trauma and was in surgery. Probably wont know if they pass or not until tomorrow in respect to the families.

I've heard evryone is stable but both the people you mentioned will be listed in critical condition for the time being.

A freak deal for sure. Hopefully all of the fans aren't too seriously hurt. Thankfully none of the drivers were hurt.

the accident obviously isnt funny, but did you notice at the 48 second mark, the guy recording makes sure he still has a hold of his beer? I guess thats important, people injured, 2 critically, but be sure you hold on to your beer.
