Blackmon is probably the difference between a blowout loss vs a close loss or ILL win, but I think Bryant will be the one who is the real difference maker that leads them to an IU win. He's just way better than any of our bigs on both ends. I'd take an IU cover. You need depth to win on the road and we don't really have any proven depth at the 1-3 right now (because Groce doesn't play any of them enough minutes to get them comfortable)

Indiana's RPI today is 135. In the eyes of the Committee, if the Illini lose today, does this count as a "bad loss"? Or is that a loss to a 200+ team?

I think they're an exception to the rule, and would expect their RPI to come up a bit over the conference slate as well. They have some really good wins, and some really losses, and RPI tends to throw a little more shade at the bad losses

Why is their rpi so low? Did I miss something?

The RPI the committee looks at is the RPI at the time of the game, correct? So, in theory, couldn't a team improve quite a bit in the course of the season in terms of RPI and still count as a "bad loss" on another team's resume? Or do they look at the RPI of the teams at the end of the season when considering that?

Played a ton of crappy, 200+ RPI teams.

No, it's at the end of the season. How would "at the time of the game" even work? I mean, just think about what you're proposing as a team's RPI can change DURING A GAME. It wouldn't be possible. And what would you use for the first game of the season when everyone is 0-0?

I don't think we have to worry about Indiana qualifying as a "bad" or "good" loss. We need decent wins to even have a tournament chance, and this is one of our chances at a decent win. The Big Ten isn't particularly strong this year, you have to beat the good teams (recall, IU did beat UNC and KU this season, despite their 0-3 conference start).

Currently:

IU's RPI is forecast to be 49 pre-btt.
UI's RPI is forecast to be 78 pre-btt.

IIRC, 67 is the lowest RPI for an at large (USC RPI 67 - 2011).

Early season RPI is a little volatile, but the equation of "avoid bad losses, accumulate good wins" pre conference play tends to lead to a decent RPI after a full conference slate (in a P5 conference)

He was just correcting BlindLoyalty's "IIRC" (he'd said 67 was the highest at-large). Cuse was a bubble team, a lot of folks were surprised they made it, but nobody can really say Cuse didn't wind up justifying their selection

Off to an awkward offense no defense start. Better get it together before this thing g is out of hand.

Well, they made it because the committee decided to ignore the games they lost while Boeheim was suspended. And they should still be sending thank you notes to Middle Tennessee State for that gift.

They've done their scouting on Thorne. He'll put the ball on the floor and you can strip him.
