Scheelhaase glad he waited to become Illini's quarterback

Petrino and Illinois quarterbacks coach Jeff Brohm said Scheelhaase can be an effective college passer despite not having an overpowering arm. In 2004, Petrino and Brohm worked with Louisville quarterback Stefan LeFors, who was the nation's leader in passing efficiency and completion percentage. Like LeFors, Scheelhaase can improve arm strength with technique.

"He doesn't have a cannon," Brohm said. "That's not going to be his forte. He knows the throws he can make and knows when he has to put extra juice on it. He has to use more of his lower body -- his legs and rear end and having great feet. That will parlay into having a strong arm.

"He's got to use his feet and body as much as he can with his throws."
