Griffith rushed into record books the last time Illini, SIU met

A historic performance didn't get off to a fast start for Howard Griffith.
An Illinois senior running back in 1990, Griffith took a handoff on a draw play early in the game. Holding the ball in the wrong arm, Griffith left it vulnerable. Next thing he knew, Southern Illinois linebacker Kevin Kilgallon tore it away from Griffith and raced 27 yards for a touchdown, and SIU eventually led 21-7.
"The day didn't start out well for me," Griffith said. "He rips the ball from my hands, spins me around, and I get clocked by another guy. I watched him score while lying flat on my back."
