Seth Davis pointed out they haven't really played great competition. We might just punch them in the mouth and they won't know what hit em!
I wouldn't agree. They didn't play anybody better than SDSU in the tournament but they beat Marquette three times in large margin in the conference. They also beat UNC, Gonzaga, and Texas in non-conference. Their resume is better than ours. The only team that can slow them down seems to the Creighton (Seton Hall once also.) Need to learn from them.

Davis said they haven't played great competition in the tournament. Obviously they had a few really good teams in the Big East and, generally, still spanked them all.

What Davis did say is that they haven't faced anyone with our across the board combination of size and quickness basically all season so it will be interesting to see how they handle it.

I've not seen anyone of note really calling for us to win, but I've seen a respectable number saying we, at a minimum, have a puncher's chance or even that we have the best shot of all remaining teams to know them out.

Last night was the tourney game that IL always loses. Bad free throws poor 2nd half shooting some dumb turnovers and a few bad whistles. Yet somehow they won the game.

Is UConn better than IL - yes but the beauty of one and done is you don’t have to be better 4 out of 7. Just got to beat em once. UConn is overdue for a tight game. Will game pressure get to them. Also the Illini program is beyond way overdue to pull out a big unexpected win in this type of situation. Let’s be the 89 Michigan this year. Just hot when they have to be.
Yes, last night’s game was Washington 06 and Arizona 01 (foul trouble), Villanova 88 and Virginia Tech 07 (blown leads/free throw woes) and Georgia Tech 85 and Alabama 86 (rock fights) all rolled into one.

The outcome was much different this time, though.

I doubt we'll be spying on the UCONN practices and know every play they're about to run before it happens.

-going to have to defend tomorrow
-need to make a lot of threes, Coleman in particular is going to need to make some to pull Clingan out of the lane
-Quincy/Goode need to play well, won't be a Rodgers game. wouldnt hurt if Harmon found it either.
It's tricky to put Coleman on Clingan. While Clingan is not Kofi, I can still see him destroying Coleman inside.

We got the thing we didn't have in all those cases: the other team was peeing down their leg too!

We're getting some tourney luck we're long overdue for this year.

Elite Eight #10 in program history! For reference, here are the other Big Ten programs, with Elite Eights since 2000 in parentheses:

Michigan State: 14 (9)
Ohio State: 14 (3)
Michigan: 13 (4)
Indiana: 11 (1)
ILLINOIS: 10 (3)
Wisconsin: 6 (4)
Purdue: 5 (2)
Maryland: 4 (2)
Iowa: 4 (0)
Penn State: 2 (0)
Minnesota: 1 (0)
Rutgers: 1 (0)
Nebraska: 0 (0)
Northwestern: 0 (0)

And reorganized as simply Elite Eight appearances since 2000, with the most recent one in parentheses:

Michigan State: 9 (2019)
Michigan: 4 (2021)
Wisconsin: 4 (2015)
ILLINOIS: 3 (2024)
Ohio State: 3 (2013)
Purdue: 2 (2019)
Maryland: 2 (2002)
Indiana: 1 (2002)
Iowa: 0
Penn State: 0
Minnesota: 0
Rutgers: 0
Nebraska: 0
Northwestern: 0

So yeah, at least for a few more hours, we have twice as many Elite Eights and over twice as many Final Fours as mighty Purdue. :ROFLMAO:

It's a good thing you posted this today instead of the same time yesterday.

I understand but the tourney is just three games so far. They did play UNC which qualifies size and quickness but that's early in the season. Hopefully we catch them off guard. I think the most difficult thing about UConn is your defense has to work (rebound, too). It's hard to outgun them unless you rain threes. Good our defense is designed to run people off the 3pt line. We will see if it works tomorrow.

How much of a comp is Purdue to UCONN? Can we just roll out the same-ish kind of game plan? Theyve got a dominant big man in Clingan and guards that can shoot. Edey is better than Clingan (if not better at least more dominant/more of a focus for the game plan for Purdue), guards are probably a wash?

We've seen this movie before, haven't we?

Statisticians don't take the court. Players do, and I will take our guys, our coaches, our culture, all day, everyday, anywhere, against anyone. What number do you assign to heart and being an EDG on this team. Let's roll.
What a difference a year makes for the prevailing attitude among our fans. 🤣

While I am hoping for a win and think we CAN beat UConn, I am not expecting a victory. And that is okay, as I am incredibly happy with this team's season! With that said, two positive things I have been thinking about...

1. The UConn board is giving us infinitely more respect than the Iowa State board ... and they're defending National Champions and the overall #1 seed. That really shows how delusional Iowa State fans are for some reason, haha.

2. If we DO beat UConn ... I honestly think this team will have JUST as good of a shot as the 2005 team to win it all. That 2005 team ran into a titan of a team in North Carolina, and even though we had our own elite team ... I knew that one was going to be a war and we could maybe lose. If we get past UConn, nobody else in the field is anywhere close to that Tar Heels squad. Bring 'em on (if we beat UConn, of course...)!

The have not really taken a punch during the tournament. Let's punch fast and see how they take it. Yea they are good - but Ill take a locked in TSJ and this team any day of the week.

If UCONN wants to run through Clingan, then let them. He can go get 40 for all I care.
Clingan is not a 30-40 pt guy. They often feed him the ball to post up and then pass out for three when you help. We can try Coleman one on one but need to be careful don't get him into foul trouble. The other option is of course Dain. It has to be a combination and find out which one is more effective.

I don't visit UConn's board but I guess these fans are knowledgeable enough. They would have been ecstatic were they to face Iowa State because ISU basically has no chance. We at least have a chance.

Contain Spencer from hitting 3's. To me, when they need a bucket, they run a play for him. Otherwise, similar to us, their athletes make plays for themselves and their 2 bigs clean up.

We match their size overall. They have not been in a close matchup that tests their nerves. I think this comes down to the wire and Orange reigns supreme.

Domask hits FTs late. They run a play to win but it rims out. Check your heart rate.

Illini: 87
UConn: 86
I think their offense system is a lot more elaborate than ours. They seem to run set plays and screens a lot. They also have a couple of other guys with north of 35% 3 pt FGP. But I agree with you. You are dead if you don't contain Spencer.

No longer in New England
I've been a huge fan of the UConn WBB team for almost 30 years & have posted on some iteration of The Boneyard (and loathed the Men's team) for nearly that long.

I find most of their MBB fans to be Myopic/Clueless and Arrogant with huge chip on their shoulder about not being in P5 Conference for football. That being said, I checked their 'UConn-Illini Scouting' thread that the following gems (& I'm NOT saying these takes are the consensus):

- UConn by 20

- They will win because of their superior conditioning (sound familiar?)

- UConn fans should chant 'No means No' every time Shannon either goes to the stripe or enters the game

Now, #3 made me laugh so hard I actually responded with -

"Oh, how original. TSJ hasn't heard that before. I'm sure it will rattle him. /s"
