I am also a big fan of Zombie Dust. My wife and I took a trip out east last fall and stopped by the 3 Floyds brewery, but unfortunately they had no Zombie Dust that day. Picked up Alpha King (I liked it) and Robert the Bruce (a Scottish Ale that was just OK).

Go with the Gumballhead next time. BTW the food served at 3F is excellent as well.

If you can, give any of the brews from Taxman Brewery in Bargersville, IN a try. They're putting out some good stuff. Also, one of the owners is a UIUC grad.

That's exactly what my son told me when we showed up with the Alpha King. In the it's a small world department, my son lives across the street from the Yonkers Brewing Company you cited earlier and he had the smoked Marzen you mentioned.

Seconded about the food. It's top notch. the place has a funky, weird vibe to it. Heavy metal was being played and they were playing 2001: A Space Odyssey on a projector. The funny thing was, the music and movie synched up perfectly!

It is a small world. While on my consulting gig in NY, I got to visit some other craft breweries in the area. Have your son get up to Captain Lawrence Brewing in Elmsford. Been around since 2005. Fun tasting room, especially on weekends. Another really good one is Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, CT. Not that far of a drive from Yonkers. One of the coolest brew destinations I've been to.

Almost forgot, I did visit the Brooklyn Brewery. Great tasting room in Brooklyn. Very popular (they even have velvet ropes outside to keep the crowds at bay). And some fine food joints in the immediate neighborhood.

Thanks for the info, Carmel. I'll let my son know about those places. He visited a brewery north of Yonkers a couple of months ago, but I don't know if it was Captain Lawrence.

Finally had a chance yesterday to get up to Russian River Brewing Co. and see if all the hype about Pliny the Elder was well-founded. I'm not normally a huge IPA fan, usually prefer a less hoppy Pale Ale and my real go-to favorite is often a stout. Still, figured I had to try Pliny to call myself a Californa beer snob, and it turns out I liked it quite a bit! I wasn't disappointed - well, at least until I had to pay for the case I brought back to my apartment.

Been dying to try both of the Pliny's! I'm really surprised none of the RRBC beers have made it to AZ yet, heck, I'm not eve sure they can be had in SoCal! I'm curious, what did a case set you back, 50ish?

I only had the Elder version and it's as good as advertised.

I've only had the Elder and it's amazing. Favorite part of being on a project in the bay area was Pliney. That and Heady Topper are far and away the best beers around.

Just had Habanero Sculpin as well and highly recommend.

It was a bit over 60 for the case, but they're half-liter bottles at least.

I'm looking for an opinion for those that make their own beer. My wife gave me a beer making kit. My understanding is that it takes 3-4 months to make, bottle and let mature. Is it worth the effort? I like good beer, but we have some really good choices for drinking beer that others have made near my house. Note: I don't have a lot of time between working and training for a marathon.

Most don't take that long. I've done a couple where it only takes a couple weeks. The darker/heavier the beer the longer it takes.

Few brews take that long, and only the first day and bottling day are time intensive.

You can enjoy ales three weeks after brew day. And even if it did take that long, it's worth it. I have been brewing since 1994 (other than when I lived overseas like I do now) and I love it and miss it.

EDIT: What kind of kit did you get? When I started, I did extract only brews and brew day was probably 2-3 hours, followed by fermentation for a week then bottling for another couple of hours (gets more streamlined the more you do it) then two weeks later I started cracking them open. Unless you're starting off with all-grain recipes, I would anticipate that your schedule would be similar.

BTW, what did everyone enjoy for IPA day yesterday? I had Elvis Juice, a very citrusy IPA brewed by my hometown guys, BrewDog.

Not an IPA, but I had a Cane & Abel (live in NYC, so cool for me) last night. Most recently I've been drinking the habanero infused Sculpin IPA which is AMAZING!!!! Hot, yes. But if you only want a beer or two it's great.

And re: making beer, my wife is more of the brewer (I'm lucky), but we love the process and waiting to try our latest batch.

I went with a Buckledown Citra Clencher. It's as close to a sessionable DIPA as I've ever had. The 8.1% ABV hides itself pretty well. I give it an enthusiastic :thumb: :thumb:

I didn't realize it was IPA day, I would have saved my last Pliny!

Nice choices for IPA day, all! Even if you didn't have an IPA. :)

Thank you all for the advice on beer making. I think I will give it a shot. My first round is an Amber. I'll try on Saturday.

Pain Cave from Solemn Oath is very good. It is a 9.0% DIPA. It is a little boozy and malty, but I find it to be very good.

Took my brother, his fiance, and my wife to Luksus this past weekend. My second time going, and both times it's been phenomenal. Check out the beer list of the restaurant, or of Torst, the bar up front. Simply insane.

Didn't see a beer list... saw a bar menu. Is it really so hard to put a simple link on your website that says, FOOD MENU, DRINKS, BEERS (especially for a place known for their craft beers?) or the like? My daughter(s) will be spending Christmas in NYC, I'll pass on the recommendation for her/them to check it out.
