Hilarious that people have said Big Mike is a poor (or even average) athlete. He's not just big and strong. His explosive short area quickness is the first thing that jumped out at me last year.

Edit: Also, does any other team in the B1G have a better secret weapon than Thorne, Jr.?!? I know that his diabetes and injury history may limit him to 20 minutes/game or so, but 6'11, 270 pound dudes with 6-pack abs who can get chin level to a rim pretty much don't exist outside the NBA/blue blood universe. #planettheory

Oh, I don't care what anyone says -- Thorne is an absolute specimen. If he doesn't choose to pursue basketball professionally, he could have a great career in the WWE. I'm only half kidding.

Jump squats with 250lbs scare me. I'm thinking of the strain that places upon landing to knees, ankles, Achilles, etc. I hope that's only an occasional thing Fletch has them doing, though I trust that he knows his stuff. Or maybe I'm just gun shy because I've strained more ligaments and gained more shin splints from doing box jumps than anything else...

I think the strain is exactly why he's doing it. One of the best ways to prevent lower body injuries is having proper landing mechanics. Jump hard, land soft, and on 2 feet. Fletch even said they were working on landing in an interview. I'd imagine this a good way to replicate coming down from 30 inches off the ground with a 200+ lb defender hanging on you.

I think we'll be the surprise team of next season. Not much is expected from this team. That's fine by me.

But we have experience, depth, size, ball-handling. Lots of positive pieces. IF this team buys into each other and plays together, there is potential to have a bit of a tourney run.

Either way, this upcoming season should be a pleasure to follow after the last few seasons (heck, decade).

Malcolm will be a nice centerpiece on O with JCL opening up the offense from beyond the arc, Thorne Jr. manning the post and Finke stretching from the 4. Bulldog at PG. And decent talent at each back-up spot.

Barring injuries and off court issues I feel we have the personnel to be very competitive. Regarding Kipper I thought as high school players he had more of a motor and skill than DJW. DJW is the longer and taller athlete. Sounds like Kipper is being viewed more as a SG/WF than PF which I agreed with back several months. I think he is the natural replacement for Hill, don't know how that translates to minutes this year.

Never watched Kipper in high school, but I doubt he had more skill than
DJW. If he did then he would've been a high 4 star or maybe even 5 star recruit.

Pretty exciting to see the physical transformation of MH. He is no longer just highly skilled. If he makes the League, he needs to give Fletch a nice gift.

I concur, was thinking of a possible back injury. Not for amateurs.

Wow. He's noticeably more explosive.

I still attach potential to Hill. I think we'll see him grow into a respectable athlete one day. Maybe never an elite athlete, but a solid one. He'll be one to keep an eye on.

A 200# guy jumping up 6" or so with 250# on his back in a controlled environment doesn't have nearly the strain of the same 200# guy jumping up almost 40" and then landing. Jumping energy is weight*jumpheight (or the integral of force*bendingdistance for you science geeks). ;)

FYI you probably shouldn't box jump unless you can squat at least 1.5x your weight. Supposedly there is little bang for the buck, and makes one injury prone.

Fletch seems to be remarkable.

Uh, he's now jumping and running at an NBA level...

freaking awesome.

Alot of power lifters and now athletes do jump squats to become faster. They use 70-85% of their max one time a week for around 10 sets of 2. Least that's how the Westside Barbell guys do speed training.
I do it too, but I can't jump like Hill. ;)

Fletcher certainly seems to be making his impact. Think about Hill and his actual age and realize his body is still maturing. I'm excited to see how the team's physical improvements translate on the court.

Having said that, I'm hoping to see much better defensive angles, close outs, and off the ball D.

Luckily I can squat well over 2x bodyweight at 200lbs. Still didn't fully prevent injury. ;)

I guess what I'm saying is plenty of people still won't recognize him as that caliber of athlete. So used to seeing all these naturally explosive players who ride that potential their whole lives. Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone who's transformed themselves at this level from a sub-par athlete to someone who may legitimately meet League standards when it's all said and done. Pure heart & hustle.

Completely agree with both points.

The promising thing to me is knowing the effort and commitment it takes to make the physical improvements that are being documented by pictures, stats, etc. That speaks to the culture of the team.

I am hopeful the same commitment is being given to improve the basketball skills necessary to compete at the highest level. They clearly are completing their physical training with purpose and I would expect they are doing the same on the court.
