In the land of the Nittany Lion
Those glasses Tacko wears... My wife, whose eyesight isn't very good now (it was excellent when she married me; looking at my handsomeness day in and day out just wore out her eyes), noticed that they seem to be a very strong prescription. There also seems to be some sort of "blinders" on the sides.

What's up with that? Between the prescription and the sides of the glasses, he must have a bad case of tunnel vision, not to mention worse than average depth perception. And that may explain the poor freethrow performance and also, come to think of it, you don't see him taking very many long--as in no threes--or even mid-range shots. He makes about five attempts per game, and of those he has a pretty good shooting performance. He just doesn't take shots that aren't a sure thing. His big numbers are in rebounding and, well, not that much more, considering the time he's getting. He's a pretty much one-dimensional player. Tacko's stats

And remember when he all but ran over that ISU player who stopped right in front of him? One fo the commentators mentioned that Tacko might not have seen him, being below his range of vision. Well, could be. It really could be. I'm sure that Tacko compensates for that somewhat--obviously he does--but that's likely his kryptonite. Just send a short on a kamikaze mission to run in front of him and slow down. It's sort of like panic braking a Ford Fiesta in front of a Peterbilt hauling logs. Just do that to him five times and he fouls out.

After trying all day and calling both ui and ucf, finally got tickets. Ucf box office sold to me after telling them how ticketmaster wasn't working. She said it was nearly sold out. We are in 203. Wish there would've been a way ui could have sold us all tix all in one area. But hope they play good again for JW. We might as well be the "other" team that ends the season with a win!

I think he actually has some very solid insights but his incessant hot takes are often hard to stomach.

If your commentators are smart and really know basketball, and Dakich does, I am fine with them just having a good time and BSing out there. He's similar to Jeff Van Gundy in that way. Sports is supposed to be fun.

Agreed. I'd take Dakich over those guys we had to listen to on Monday 10 out of 10 times. They were brutal.

This Dakich convo has me thinking...who would you say are the top 5 NCAAM announcers today? Maybe this should be its own thread but I'm far too lazy for that.

Bill Raftery would be at the top of my list.

5. Anyone but Vitale
4. Anyone but Doris Burke
3. Anyone but Beth Mowins
2. Anyone but Gus Johnson
1. Anyone but Vitale

In reality my top 5 are
1. Lundquist
2. Raftery
3. Lavin
4. Sean McDonough
5. Rece Davis

But I freaking hate the 4 in the first list. So glad Gus isn't doing any B1G games anymore. Rise and fire!!!

You would listen to Doris Burke and Beth Mowins before Gus...yikes

I always liked Tim Brando. We don't get him much for our games if ever but, enjoy his call on other games. He has to be getting close to retiring.

I don't mind Doris Burke near as much Beth Mowins.

As Tracy Turns

Tracy Abrams over the last 10 games:

9.7 points
3.6 rebounds
2.7 assists (to 0.7 turnovers - 3.9:1 ratio)
1.2 steals
46.2% 3pt (18-39)
47.9% FG

He's playing just as efficiently as he was the first 12 games of the season. If he hadn't endured a horrific slump from the Missouri game through the Minnesota game on 2/4 (exactly 12 games), his final season would go down in Illini lore as the ultimate redemption story (esp. if his strong play carried us to another win or two and into the tournament).

The middle twelve games of the year, his slump was epic: 4.6 ppg, 2.6 reb, 1.4 ast (to 1.5 turnovers), 0.7 stl, 23.9% FG, 12.1% 3pt (4-33), all while continuing to play over 22 min/game. Obviously, the level of competition factors in to some extent, but Tracy has put up great numbers against plenty of solid teams this year; the middle stretch seems like an outlier even if his performance should have been expected to dip against B1G opponents.

Now that good Tracy is back, we're on a bit of a tear. He's really been a difference maker this year for better and worse.

Color guys?

Bill Raftery is the king, he might be the best ever in any sport. Jay Bilas is great. Steve Lavin is great. I like Dakich a lot. Len Elmore is pretty good, CWebb has been really good since he started doing it. We're biased, but I always enjoy Stephen Bardo.

That was in no particular order. I try to avoid listening to any of them, and was really disappointed to see Vitale still doing commercials that aired during the NCAA tournament, since that should be a safe respite from his antics and Dookie-diddling.

Agree on Raftery, I could listen to the man yell "ONIONS" all day. Speaking of which, there is an awesome Onions shirt out that Bilas was wearing on ESPN the other day. Might have to invest...

This. At least we can count on Dakich to watch the game. Who knows who the Monday pair watched.

At some point they transcended badness and became their own form of entertainment. I want to see those guys call more games. Any sport. I'm in.

I loved how firmly they continued to announce that UIUC is the only B1G school in the state of Illinois. Those guys clearly haven't been influenced by the Northwestern University media cabal.

There are 10 of us over in Section 204. See you tonight!
