North Carolina 71, Gonzaga 65

Sloppy play, poor court conditions imo, way to much referee involvement, to many minutes without points as a result...Zags had it, UNC took it...Congrats looking forward to out ILLINI next year and the following ones as well.

It's like you guys have never watched college basketball before.

Bad officiating and sloppy play is characteristic of this level.

The flagrant 1 has to go. 2 guys going for a loose ball and you get a flagrant. I hate the rule

I knew as soon as they started over-calling fouls in the 2nd half that Gonzaga was going to be in trouble. For some reason refs see those sky blue jerseys and assume there needs to be a call made. Nobody could possibly be guarding these 5 star elite future lotto picks unless they're fouling, right Sean May?

Well, I hope they enjoy their shampionship. How long before it gets vacated?

Yep. Bad officiating may be the defining characteristic. It was however particularly bad last night. But I don't think it was one-sided. It was just generally terrible. There were stretches of time when every call went to the Zags and times when they all went to UNC.

Totally agree. The officiating has been bad both ways all tournament. Not one sided has the NC haters like to think. Of course I thought that in 2005 also.

I know you're just being sarcastic, but the real answer is, of course, never. UNC will NEVER have to vacate whatever is found out about their academic malfeasance.

The NCAA is dragging this out as long as possible to either:
A. Hope it gets forgotten about.
B. Wait for Deputy Dog to retire so they can ban UNC from the post season for one year during the turnover to a new coach.

I hate UNC. I hate that the NCAA can be so boldly protective of them with absolute impunity, and I hate UNC. Lastly, I hate UNC.

The bolded is where the hate should really be. UNC is just doing what they are allowed to do. Yeah, I generally hate UNC too. But the NCAA is the real villain who has different rules for different members.

I'm sure that I'm the only Illini fan on here that is also a Carolina fan. I spent 5 years living in Chapel Hill and going to basketball games while my wife was in grad school at UNC. The Illini are priority to me and I hated Carolina in 05 so I have a different perspective. This Carolina team does not have any lotto picks or one and done players. The major contributors are juniors and seniors. They haven't had a one and done since 2006 so while I understand the hatred they have not been like Kansas, Kentucky, or Duke lately. It has been fun as a fan to have good teams year after year with players that stay and you get to know over 3-4 years. I really hope that the Illini get to that level soon and if Carolina gets penalty's and struggles I'm good with that as long as it is after the Illini are back to where they should be first so I still have a team to enjoy. :)

What still amazes me about 2005 is that even with Augustine on the bench for all but 9 minutes of the game, and even after UNC were allowed to shoot 37 MORE free throws than us, we still only lost that game by 5 points. Shows who really had the better team.

Yeah, I hate UNC basketball as an institution because they beat us while possibly committing academic fraud.

However, I agree with the rest of this post. That UNC team was built "the right way", IMO, with lots of upperclassmen from North Carolina. That's what I hope Illinois basketball can become. Keep the best in state talent home and build dominant teams with it. Kentucky was super fun to watch this year with their one-year mercenaries, but I prefer a team that's built with local talent that grows and sticks around for a while over high-school all-star teams.

There's no way Gonzaga doesn't lose this in heartbreaking fashion, right?

I said that to my friend early in the second half when the refs were calling every little thing they could.

Mind you, it looks like they folded mentally at times, but the officiating was huge in this one. Didn't look like either team knew how to adjust to the refs.

This is on top of the irony that they've been cheating for decades and just won the championship. Sad day for college bball IMO.

Have fun on that bandwagon. I wish I could bring myself to do it, but I just can't.

Been in the state since 1999, oldest son just started his masters at UNC this spring after finishing his undergrad in December. My family seems to be slowly moving over to the "dark side", but not me, I still can't root for UNC & yes I got in big trouble for sending out an e-mail to my family saying my son was graduating with a degree in AFAM studies (totally worth it).
