A monster. I don't know if you can make a "statement" assistant coach hire, but this is as close as you can get to it.

A real college basketball program. We are running one. Pinch me.

Agree. They don't get much more well known than Antigua. Our new Jimmy Collins?

I'm not sure who you think the last ......

Yep, and I think Illini fans are in for another big surprise who gets chosen for the final assistant coach position - stand-by!

assistant spot is going to......but others seem awfully sure/confident that Chin Coleman is all but done. If the case, Underwood clearly showing that he thinks having a relationship with Irvin's is necessary.

This hire was definitely Underwood. ADs don't chase assistant coaches.

But the rumor around Champaign yesterday of Underwood asking for $150,000 to close the deal and JW immediately signing off on it is all Whitman.

This Whitman Underwood team might be hard to handle.

I don't know enough about him.......

Hate to post this and see the explosion of who said it. But......

By the way, I don't really like the choice if it is him.

but he has a lot more to sell at UI than he did at Bradley and UIC. If he can get Chicago kids/parents/coaches to give Underwood a chance, winning and style of play will win them over. We will see if he is as connected to Irvin's/Slaughter, etc as people have mentioned. This is a far, far better staff than what Groce had. I expect good things. Maybe I am crazy.

I wonder if some of this has to do with the opportunity learn Underwoods "system". It doesn't hurt to say that his former assistant just got the HC job at Oklahoma based most likely on retaining that system.

If we are going to go after a UIC assistant that has Chicago ties for the 3rd assistant role, why not give Deon Thomas a look? He was at UIC as an assistant, played at Simeon (albeit awhile ago) and could speak to being an Illini...

This could be a dumb suggestion, but was just curious.
