So who should the Bears be targeting at 3? I don't like the idea of a safety or corner that high. Give me Watson, Trubisky or Allen or trade down. I really hope they take a QB in the first three rounds.

I think they take Solomon Thomas if he's still there. Try to trade down and take one of the DBs - Adams, Lattimore, Hooker - with a bit lower pick if he's not. And take the best QB remaining with their first pick of the second round or a late first round pick via trade. I'm going to guess Mahomes from Texas Tech.

The Bears have so many holes, literally the only position that would be wrong for them to pick at #3 is running back. I think you can make an argument for any other position assuming the player in question has #3-pick talent.

Judging from the schedule and how free agency went, we should probably get used to the Bears having a top-5 pick. They'll likely be doing it again next year. The only real drama will be if it's the same GM making the pick.

Again, I would be shocked if Pace takes a QB as the 3rd pick. He's said over and over that he makes picks based on value, not position. And none of the QB's are safe enough to pick that high. Watson looked super shaky last year, despite being on a stacked team. He has a lot of potential, but too many flaws to pick him this high.

Looking at the schedule for this season, I could easily see an 0-4 or 0-5 start if this team isn't significantly improved over last year. There will be tremendous pressure to get off to a good start as well.

Holee crap! I did NOT see that coming.

I think trading up to get a qb is a huge mistake given all the holes on that team.

Prove me wrong.

Me either. Overpaid, but, if he is the one they wanted, and only one, can’t afford to risk someone else moving up and taking. We'll see, hope for best.

I hope they are really, really sure about this because if Trubisky isn't a star, this is a complete disaster.

Of course they aren't sure. The price to pay was high I must admit, but if this is the right guy who cares about 3rd and 4th round draft picks. I like the move and acknowledge that it could be a huge mistake. Get busy livin or get busy dyin. NFL football teams without an elite QB are dead in the water. I know Dilfer won a super bowl. I'd rather roll the dice on finding an elite QB that gives me a chance to win for the next decade. Good on ya Pace!

Wow. New GM who was supposed to so smart and you trade 3 picks away to move to get a 4th round level talent at QB? Same inept Bears management.

They gave up 3 draft picks to move up 1 spot.

He better be a whole Hell of a lot better than DeShaun Watson. They could have just kept the picks and wound up with Watson.

I would say that the Bears will probably try to trade down from the 36th pick to get more picks overall, but since I quite obviously have no read whatsoever on what this team is doing, I won't.

I assume either Jacksonville or the Jets were going to trade into the slot if the Bears hadn't.

They may have, but even if they did is the risk of ending up with Watson instead of Trubisky really worth all of those picks? Only time will tell but I highly doubt it.

Have we learned nothing about trading picks for a qb? Last time we did that it was for a pro bowler, and look how that turned out. This guy started 1 year in college, was fine, but 2nd pick overall worthy? Especially over someone like a NC winner (over the NFL-ridden Crimison Tide) Watson? :hand:

It is a QB desperate league. Trubisky then Mahomes. Bears have to get it right once every century right?

Sid Luckman was drafted in 1939... we still have another 20+ years in purgatory.

Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL. How many super bowls has he won?

I would much rather stack up picks and build a great offensive line and a great defense. IMO that is easier than finding an elite QB. Not to mention there were multiple guys that would have fit perfectly in this defense and could come in and compete right away at a high level. Instead we roll the dice on a guy we don't know much about and lose multiple picks in the process. On paper I don't think it could be much worse.

But looking at it from the optimistic side...the Bears obviously really really liked him. I think Pace has drafted well so far (if you ignore the injuries which are out of his control) so I guess I will continue to trust him. And like you said, elite QB's are important and if we just found one then we will be seeing lots of success over the next 10-15 years.

I'm starting to rationalize this a bit.

The Bears were going to draft a quarterback this draft that they thought would have a chance to be their starter. It could be that they thought Trubisky was the only one that had a solid chance to succeed. That's a reasonable opinion, shared by some experts.

Two other teams traded up to take quarterbacks. We can probably assume that the Bears fielded offers for their pick from teams that had qb needs. Thus they knew they wouldn't be able to trade down and get Trubisky AND they were going to have to trade up to guarantee they got their guy.

So IF their assessment of the QB class is correct, then they made the only move they could.

The draft is all a crap-shoot anyway, especially for quarterbacks. The past indicates that this will be another disastrous first round move for the Bears, but at least we finally have a new quarterback with potential. It is always easy to look back on missed opportunities of not drafting the few quarterbacks who actually succeed in the NFL, so here's to hoping for a diamond in the rough world of NFL quarterbacks.

The problem is QB isn't the only thing the Bears need. They have a lot of holes and can't afford to be reaching on guys.

IMO there are a lot of QB's out there who would look good with a lot of talent around them. OTOH there are very, very few QB's who can make a mediocre or average team look good. By picking Trubisky this high and spending extra picks to get him, the Bears are banking on him being one of the very limited QB's.

Let other teams take risks and pay way too much for a QB who has an uphill climb to being a long term solution. Meanwhile, we can be making smarter safer picks and getting a QB at the right value, or trading for a QB when we are ready to win, or getting one in free agency.

Ryan Pace is getting killed in the press today, and I hated the trade up at the time, but after some reflection I like it more and more.

Without a QB none of the other positions matter. This was obviously Ryan Pace's guy and he did what he felt he had to do to get him. He might have been taken advantage of by the 49ers, but good on them for improving themselves. We will likely never know the truth but can rest assured that there were calls being made by other teams to move up.

The Bears still have plenty of rounds left in this draft to address their other needs and Glennon should be a good mentor for TruRisky.

I can't say I like the trade but as a Bear's fan I sure hope it pans out. One thing I don't understand is the talk that Trubisky may not see the field for a couple of years. If he is good enough to draft at no. 2 overall, then why not play him immediately. That's what most teams drafting a qb high are doing now. And if he isn't good enough to do that, then why not draft a stud defensive player that could start right away. It also makes me wonder why they used $20 million of cap space this year to sign Glennon. If you were going to pick Trubisky, Glennon becomes superfluous imo.

To me this also shows that Pace has been given assurances by ownership that he will be around for at least 2-3 more years no matter what. And I doubt Fox can be too happy with this pick. The Bears are almost guaranteed another 4-6 win season and I doubt Fox will be around when Trubisky is starting.

To me it is also interesting how Pace has used these high first round picks. In year one picked a wide receiver who picked up football later in life and really only started one year and had a leg injury already. Year two picked a lb that is undersized and is a project. Both guys can't stay on the field. Year 3 seemingly overpays to move up to draft another project. None of these guys has or will make any immediate impact. This is turning into a 5-6 year rebuild. It shouldn't take that long.

I hope Trubisky is the real deal and can become a top-10 qb in the league. If so it was a great trade. If not the Bears will continue to be bad for the next four years or so.
