I think your friends and everyone you've run it by were just being polite.

When thinking of a new potential mascot, no matter how symbolic or representative of the school, state, or it's history, please ask yourself this first: DOES IT SOUND DUMB? If so, stop right there.

Most harvests have scarecrows and a Scarecrow would be a representative symbol of the University of Illinois, never to be misunderstood as a Mascot. Start with an orange pumpkin head and a pair of bluejeans and take it from there. Perhaps our Scarecrow could dance with the band, emerging at the end to greet the crowd with a warm welcome to Memorial Stadium.

No offense, but hopefully with a name like Captain Hindsight you will soon see how that was a bad idea from the beginning

Two quotes to sum up the article if you don't want to read it:

"The timing was spurred in part by anti-Chief protests and other events over homecoming weekend."

"The student panel said a mascot could... help combat continued use of offensive images of the Chief."

I presume by offensive images of the Chief, they mean any images of the Chief.

If by protests they mean when the Anti-chief people harassed and assaulted the pro-chief people who had registered for the homecoming parade. Then the Student Senate promoted the video of the protest and wrote #NotOurMascot even though the current resolution voted on by the entire student body supports the Chief, so the Senate was acting in opposition to the currently passed resolution. Good stuff. Not to mention Dozier(one of the more recent unofficial-official chiefs) whose event was protested and attacked is literally 50% Native American.

If you can't beat em, literally beat them.

Wait, "politicians" are acting against their constituents wishes? That's unheard of!!

Anyone ever suggest the Fighting Illini Red Tails?
Could reference both the hawk and the Tuskegee Airman, first activated in Rantoul btw...

The costume is even on sale!!!

To truly make that work, they'd have to dress the hawk up in a Tuskegee Airman uniform. But then, I'm sure people would start complaining about cultural appropriation or some other PC trigger.

Nothing military. I understand the columns and WW1 origins and tie ins, but everything since then has been military, military, military, and you could even make a case that it has been nothing but military since 1848. Enough already.

If the vast majority of people need to look it up on Google or Wikipedia to understand the reference, then it probably should not be a team name or mascot.

They’re not changing the nickname. It’ll still be “Fighting Illini.” (For now.) They’re looking for a mascot or symbol.

I vote for an inoffensive orange and blue blob. It would be the perfect metaphor for the current state of the U of I.

After years of hoping for a comeback of the Chief, I finally came to this same conclusion. No dancing on the sidelines, just a half time, walk out the mid-filed/court and salute the flag. Stand at attention, until the music ends. Walk back to the locker room.
Stand at attention during the anthem? That would show disrespect for the NFL players' protest. Any the W.W. I infantryman might cause outrage in the German-American community.

Maybe Bob the Builder would be a good mascot because FB and MBB are always rebuilding.
