By the way again, what was the name of the Austin Peay player, husky guy, who killed Illinois in 1987?

Looks like Darryl Bedford, maybe? 6-8 center, had 24 points (5 of 13 from three) and 6 rebounds in the game.

Yep. I believe there will be a new starting 5.:illinois:

Doubt it. I think BU will use this opportunity to challenge the regular starters to come out firing on all cylinders. Maybe AJ in for Smith, but I think he will start Smith to show that he still believes in him. No need to shake up the starting 5 against Austin Peay anyway. I think BU will save that tactic for later in the year if we are really struggling and need a change of pace.

Yup. The name Austin Peay still sends a chill up the spine of us old timers. Nobody had ever heard of them and now we'll never forget them.

Let's get a big win Wednesday and get Finke and Smith back on track while we do it.

I guess that makes me an old timer because I cannot forget that loss, I couldnt believe it when it happened. I want to see payback.:thumb:

The name sounds right. And I remember the 3s. I just don't remember him being a center at 6'8". I thought the guy was kind of pudgy (no offense) forward or guard. But the point is, I remember he had a great game. Memory is unreliable; I'm sure you're right.

Thanks.

Yep, he was a center. Kept figuring, he can't keep making these can he?

Hi, Ransom, this is Liberty Valance. Great movie! Anyway, don't know the motivation behind your question, but Austin Peay was governor of Tennessee before the Civil War. Hence the team name Governors. Found this out 20 years ago after meeting a prof from AP.

30 years ago Illinois was a 3 seed in the Southeast, playing in Birmingham. Hopes were high for a solid tourney run that year with veterans like Doug Altenberger, Tony Wysinger, and Ken Norman, along with a whole bunch of youngsters like Kendall Gill, Nick Anderson, Stephen Bardo, as well as Kenny Battle. The first round game was against Austin Peay, and between the bracket announcement and the first game, the shouts around campus were "Who the hell is Austin Peay??"

That chant went national after the beat UIUC in the first round, and came within 3 points of upsetting #6 Providence 2 days later.

Maybe I'm the only one around here that remembers that, but when I talk to my college buddies that one usually comes up.

Edit--btw that #6 Providence team made it to the Final Four that year, putting a scare into Syracuse, who went on to play IU in one of the all-time great Championship games.

I thought (maybe I am misremembering) I heard him say something about wanting to switch up starters before, and he didn't, but should have, and you will see a new lineup. Did I make all that up in my head?

I'm assuming we're going to see some zone. Hopefully BU can experiment a little. Put Damonte, Alstork, or Smith in the middle of it. Or play Damonte at PG, with AJ and Alstork on the wings. Try to find something that gives the team confidence against a zone.

Not sure why we would not be attempting some high low back screen actions for lobs against some of the zone teams?

AJ starting to look a bit BP3-ish... He's seeing the floor pretty well and helps on backside D very well.

He doesn't have the handles BP did and hes a more consistent shooter at this point in his career.

I remember we kept screaming at Kenny Norman to “go out and cover him !” And if memory serves me right, at halftime or early in the second half Dickie V. said that if Peay (“Let’s Go Peay !”) beat Illinois he’d stand on his head the next time he was in Champaign. And he was true to his word.

Agree - that was part of my 'ish' part - but he is getting to the rim albeit via pinch post screen and is getting some tip ins. He's going to have to develop the pump fake and drive since he's not a point of focus for the opposing team.

Got it at -18 this morning. Are we feeling good about that line? I am thinking the Illini get over 80, right?

I'm staying away from this one. Two teams roughly on our level, Vandy and Ok St, beat Austin Peay by 19 and 16 respectively.

Yeah, they're even better than us at forcing turnovers (we're 8th in the nation), and we haven't shown we can take care of the ball. This could get ugly. I still think we win though.

Ohhhh thanks for that info!

Am I crazy in thinking that our turnovers are not really because of pressure but more because of mistakes?

If Austin Peay is about pressure man defense, hopefully they won’t go zone on us and we can just shred their man in Spread.
