This Iowa team is bad. This is a must-win at home.

Best case scenario...Illinois plays really well, pressure D with a lot of TO's....we shoot the ball well....Tejon, MS, DW, CF as well as our bigs and AJ have really good games both offensively and defensively...ill wins by 20
Worst case scenario....Illinois struggles shooting the ball gets into foul trouble and loses by 5 late in the game
Most likely scenario....Illinois plays inconsistently on offense, but defense is good enough to win by 7-8

Anyone know if these FS1 games can be replayed on any streaming apps? I work overnight and no ability to record, so rely on replays from ESPN and BTN2Go.

I went to the Iowa men's basketball page in search of goofy genetic-modification-gone-wrong lookin dudes to laugh at. You know, the type of Shrek of the Midwest type of players that always fill their roster. And you know what, I'm disappointed to say that I did not find any.

The only thing I found was this assistant coach who look like the turtle from Disney's Robin Hood.

Sherman Dillard! The turtle pic is spot on. I've actually had some interaction with Dillard with some work stuff. Really cool dude actually. But he helps the black and gold so he can't be trusted.

I'm looking forward to Ebo making another step up in playing time and production. This may be a front line where Finke and Black can fair pretty well against, but for the big picture....Ebo's development and confidence are paramount to me.

I think our guards can pressure the ball and give Bohannon a lot of problems. If they let Iowa get the ball inside to Cook, Garza or Pemsl (I'm pretty sure Garza is Lurch from the Addams Family) we could be in some trouble.

But Iowa goes long stretches of showing zero interest in playing D. Get a good lead early, and we will be able to hold them off.

Finke gets the first 5 minutes and if he passes on 3 pointers he's benched. if he misses all three he benched. not sure he plays for me otherwise. a waste of 6-10 inches.

So you only play Finke if he comes out and hits one of his first three plays? You just go with Spicy G or go small? Gotta play the hand your dealt. Finke could be really valuable if we had a true center.

Look at the field goal percentages for 2's and 3's against Power 5 teams. Not all bad, but take a look.

There isn't much point in looking at field goal percentage when you can look at Kenpom and see that we are ranked 47th in defense. That's really good considering everyone is learning a new system, we have 4 freshmen, and Black/Finke are slow footed and can't protect the rim. Let's see where we are ranked at the end of the season, though.

I understand your point. But BU plays this defense because it helps out his offense even more. BU trusts his offense and believes the more possessions we have, the better chance we have of winning. Yes, we will always give up some easy buckets in this system even if we started all 5-star guys. That will take some getting used to. But the system will also force turnovers leading to easy buckets, speed up the other team leading to out of rhythm shots, and create more possessions for this offensive system that BU believes can be unstoppable.

Long story, short: We don't play this defense to give up as little points as possible. We play it to outscore teams. Our defense is part of our offense.

Underwood: Challenging week. Had the flu bug run rampant through our program. Changed some things in terms of practice.

Underwood: Think Tyler Cook is one of the best players in our league.

Underwood: They change a lot of defenses. We'll probably see some press. Offensively, they like to play fast. They've struggled a bit, but they're very good.

Underwood: Wide spectrum of guys out with the flu. Alstork was throwing up before the Michigan game. Run through our whole team.

Underwood: Everyone wants to win. I just don't know yet if we expect to win.

Underwood: We had three or four first-cutter layups that we simply threw out of bounds.

Underwood: Greg's athleticism was so evident in the Michigan game.

Underwood: Kipper's problems aren't on the offensive end. Trying to limit his mistakes on the defensive end. Do we need him? Absolutely.

Underwood: I hope it's a breakthrough for Kipper. He should feel good about the way he played. And we need it.

Underwood on Trent's speed: We want to recruit that way. He's probably one of the three or four fastest players I've been around.

I'm going to get blasted, but here goes. I'm not impressed by Underwood's defense nor do I think the Illini are it that well. Take a look at the stats against Power 5 teams. You'll find turnovers, but you'll also find a fair amount of games where the shooting percentages for both categories are high.
Why is that? Because once you beat or adjust to the pressure there are a lot of open shots available which has happened over and over. Where? Back line lay-ups and dunks. Back cuts and open 3'. You beat the pressure and swing the ball and you will find open 3's. Not to mention when the intensity isn't there which BU alluded to in the second half you really find your defense in trouble. And I haven't seen a full game of pressure, yet
One other thing. There are teams all over the country with faster and more athletic players year in and out. Yet, they don't utilize this type of defense. West Virginia, is the only team I can think of and they utilize full court pressure. Why is that? For all the reasons I stated above. This is hard to pull off against good teams. Why do you think nobody else uses it?
And you can tell me about OKST last year, but look at the numbers. They gave up a lot of points! Their offense was what carried them.
Tell me defense is carrying us? Look at the numbers and wins and losses.

Rather than respond to your points just go and look at John Belien's comments.....

Defense wins championships. It is a cliche for a reason. In the first half against michigan, it was the defense that won the half. Defense wasn't on the same level in the 2nd half.

although it was the offensive side of the ball where I think the team lost it's mojo in the second half with two turnovers within 40 seconds

I am as happy as anyone that Greg Ebo is getting more playing time as the season moves forward. But I am going to posit that the reason why is not because of how Finke and Black are playing, or not playing. I am going to give the coaching staff some props that they recognized the lack of depth at the forward/center position and realized they needed to do something about it, and NOW. So just wondering if OA has been giving Ebo some extra special individual practice time to get him coached up to play more rather than let him go until next season. And as we can see, Ebo is responding nicely. Looking forward to seeing him on the floor more and more, which means more rest for Finke and Black.
