With Finke's final 5 out, did we ever get the story on the reason behind his transfer? To me, he was the one guy whose departure was puzzling. All of the others seemed to have a somewhat logical story behind it. Lucas was looking at limited playing time next year. Mark Smith just needed a change of scenery apparently. Leron has his degree and is undersized to ever have a shot at the NBA, so why not start his overseas pro career.

But with our desperate need for bigs, why wasn't there more motivation on both sides for Finke to stick around. Him being recruited now by programs who are currently in similar or better positions than ours only seems to confirm that. Anyone know?

I buy that explanation, but I don't think pulling out of Tim's recruitment did us any favors with the Finke's.

I’ve heard it rumored that Finkes underperformance was because he was being misused by Groce. Then he was supposed to break out in BU’s system but actually regressed. Then it was floated that he was playing with a nagging injury all season. Plus we didn’t recruit Tim after he was exposed last summer. Probably best for everyone to move on.

I'll be blunt and say that would be completely stupid of him to go to Grand Canyon and play for a program has CBI potential at best. If he's looking for more exposure that could help him out professionally, he has plenty of better options. That's not even considering the huge difference in academics. I hope he's just leaving them in to be nice.

Grand Canyon finished 3rd in their conference and within 1 game of the tournament, losing in their conference final to New Mexico State.

GCU is one of the fastest rising CBB programs. They have a great coach and great facilities. If they lose the for profitness, I think they will gain even more respect.

Not saying they'll be world beaters, but they absolutely have the chance to make the tournament year in and year out.

Thanks, BlindLoyalty. I guess the News-Gazette would have been a good place to look. Can't blame him for wanting to get out after spending his whole life in Champaign and also looking for a better basketball fit.

Are we the only ones that don't restrict transfers? Maybe things are different in football (why??), but I thought its normal to restrict transfers to conference opponents and rivals? Finke to Penn St. may not seem that big of a deal, but I'm sure we will feel otherwise when we are battling Penn St. for B1G tourney (and maybe, albeit unlikely, NCCA tourney) placement, and during that opening round matchup.


I can understand the idea of bad optics, but also, if a kid doesn't want to come to Illinois because we may not allow him to transfer to Mizzou in a few years, then Jesus why do we want that kid??

Putting restrictions on guys who have left the program is not only bad form, it will come back to haunt us. We don't want to be that guy.

It is very admirable that we are letting guys transfer unrestricted, but these are the first such examples nationally that I can recall seeing.

I am confused. What we are doing, that is, Illinois is letting Finke, TJL and whoever else transfer without restrictions is the first such examples nationally? Am I understanding that correctly? And I am asking sincerely. If the answer is yes, can you elaborate? I am interested. I thought everyone except Pitt allowed unrestricted transfers (mostly).

I think in conference restrictions are incredibly common and make sense. Finke knows the ins and outs of our offense and our defense. Know our playbook and it's weaknesses. You think Penn State won't milk him for that? Only like 5 years ago it was an official Big 10 rule the you couldn't do that, probably to protect schools without making them seem like the bad guys. It's probably different overall cause Finke graduated though.

When Dakich transferred to Ohio State from Michigan, it made tons of headlines. Granted his dad is famous, but he was a walk on who was just given a scholarship, and redshirted his last year like LaTulip did, and averaged only like 3 minutes a game. If that made tons of headlines, a starting PF averaging 10PPG and 5 RPG transferring to an in conference rival definitely will.

I could be wrong, I don't follow this stuff super closely. But transfers have usually been restricted to out-of-conference teams and often Mizzou-type situations as well.

What about Bielfeldt? He went to Indiana from Michigan as a grad transfer, didn't he?

I think it's been done before.

I have no problem with Finke to PSU. I think he'd be better off at Vandy or Stanford, though.

Is the lack of restrictions telling why the player is leaving? Esp. for Finke and TJL.

We think it would be better if you play elsewhere next year. And because of that, you are free to go where you want.

Different if you really want a guy to stick around.
