He's from Western Maryland, so both Pitt and Virginia are closer than Rutgers according to my eyeballing it. But even Ohio State is closer than Syracuse.

Yea, being a geography crazed person, I couldn't resist checking further:

Big Ten (by car)
Illinois 10 hrs
Ohio State 5:45
Rutgers 3:45
Penn State 2:20
Maryland 1:40

ACC (by car)
Syracuse 5 hrs
Virginia 2:45 hrs
Pitt 3 hrs
VT 3:45

NCAA Tournament Wins Since 2009:

Syracuse - 19
Illinois - 1

Who are we kidding?

What we have to sell Golden is early playing time and a very, very different system that you could argue fits him better than what Syracuse does.

Hey now. That’s 2 NCAA Tournament wins since ‘09.

Go Illini

Or a 5th year guy is always an option.

Step one is the in-home with Okoro tomorrow to see where we stand and what his plans are.

If Okoro is reclassifying he is the #1 priority. He is a bit raw and wouldn’t have the freshman impact some might predict but he is extremely talented. We haven’t had a body like his at Illinois since I’ve been a fan. Freak athlete at 6’9”. To your point, not a lot of reason for optimism here but we seem to be 1 of 3 being considered.

Golden for me is the clear #2. Seemed to have skills that would translate to production right away in college. Similar game to Giorgi but further along.

Hinson would be 3rd. Would want to know a little more here about how his game fits what we need but if he’s a scorer you can’t have too many of those.

Calloo isn’t on the board for me. Just feels like Mike Shaw 2.0. Highly ranked early and free fall late. Body looks like he’s not taking basketball seriously.

If it’s none of the top 3 I’m thinking transfer or rolling it over. I know Frankie Policelli has an offer but I’m guessing no news on that front means we aren’t really in it. Not sure what else is out there but going to assume the HS market is pretty well set for this year at this point.

3 questions

Has Okoro taken the ACT?
Can you take official visits if you haven't taken the ACT?
Has Okoro taken official visits?
Thanks.

I know he is not on our board, but anyone think Ryan Davis can be another Krutwig?

Ebo can be really effective imho given more time. Seemed to catch difficult passes and finish. He is the anti-Shaw. Low ranked, but surprised us. I like Kane, Okoro, Ebo as our atletic bigs. Like Matic, Georgi as the stretch 4 , passing and picking bigs.

I think some people forget how inefficient Mav and Egwu we're as freshmen. Both of those players turned into better players and solid B1G players. Ebo will be better this year and same for Matic. Not sure why a lot of people think that these players are going to step in and dominate day one.

Or better yet, how bad Meyers Leonard was as a freshman.

No matter how much we say students commit to the school, the student commits to the coach, as he is the one selling the program and marketing all of its trappings and shiny objects. Boeheim is gone in two years, we know this. And while Syracuse may stay in-house with Jerry McNamara, they cannot promise Golden what will happen in two years.

Underwood could also be fired in two years, or have bailed to Kansas State or wherever, there is never coaching certainty, even though you're totally right about players committing to a coach.

If Boeheim was so certainly nearing the exit door, why did Mike Hopkins, his handpicked successor, bail for Washington?

It is more likely that Brad Underwood is at Illinois when Golden graduates than that Jim Boeheim is at Syracuse. I grant you that. But this difference is much more marginal than you're letting on.

This is a discussion that I am sure BU and Co have had, and the ethics involved in basically telling a kid to leave is something that should be discussed on this board. Is it ever acceptable for a coach tell a good player, a player to whom you recruited and offered a scholarship, a player who by all accounts is a good kid and has had no disciplinary issues, that he simply not good enough and that the scholarship that was promised to him is rescinded?

Please discuss...
I think it depends on how it happens. Certainly nothing wrong with telling a player what he has to achieve if he expects to see any playing time. I'm not ok with just telling a guy he has no place in your program and he should look elsewhere.

It took 4 years for Morgan to become an average B1G center. Hopefully, Ebo ends up beating that result.

Article on the seven remaining top 100 recruits and where this writer thinks they will land. Ramey is listed but just kind of interesting to see who is left standing besides him. The writer mentions that Ramey just released his top 10 and I assume he/she read it but for some odd reason he/she predicts Ramey will go to Villanova even though Villanova is not in his top 10. ?

https://bustingbrackets.com/2018/04/12/predicting-where-top-2018-recruits-will-end-up/

Louisville is on his list but I could have sworn that I saw an article that Mack is no longer recruiting him (or Simons). That he is looking at grad transfers instead. But I cannot find it now.

I am kind of behind on these posts. I am still back on page 35 or so. Do we still think we have a shot for Ramey? If this has already been decided in the negative then ignore this post.

The talk about Ebo leaving or not being good enough is ridiculous to me. He was a freshman, he started games and produced way earlier than we could have possibly expected him to, and is a high character guy that seems to love the program. He can jump through the roof and already demonstrated that with some nice alley oops and resounding blocks above the rim.

Name the last true Big (we'll arbitrarily say 6'9" or taller) we had who played well as a freshman. Meyers? Kiiinda. Augie? Brian Cook? It's not like we have ANY record of bigs coming in and being productive in Year 1. Usually not until Year 3. But suddenly we're tossing Matic out because in his 70 total minutes he didn't look good.

I'm not saying he'll be great, but there's no way we can evaluate him at this point. Actually, one thing we DO know about him is that he can shoot, at least in practice. That's not a skill that everyone develops.

Might sound crazy, but Tejon is just as good if not slightly better than Zavier Simpson IMO. Groce was recruiting both simultaneously, for those that didn't know. Simpson committed to Michigan and a week later Lucas committed to Illinois. IIRC, the board was pretty split on who they liked more. But given our lack of a PG at the time, we were excited to get either. If you're a PG without a good outside shot then you need talent around you. Lucas would be fun to watch on that Michigan team.

I think they are close, but Simpson’s strength, ability to finish and large end of season performance improvement gives him the edge and the steep improvement makes it likely the gap widens.

I thought Boeheim was sticking around to coach his kid who will be a freshman in 2018?

#1,597
No. Meyers Leonard would have been very good as a freshman. He had the same skills he had later. What was wrong was Weber who had no idea, and a few guards who had no idea how to pass to the post. I remember too well watching Richardson, and Paul look at Meyers for about eight seconds, and then decide to attempt to pass. It was bad fifth grade basketball, thanks to Weber. The most destructive force to Illinois basketball I have seen in a half century of being an intense fan, Bruce Weber.

I'm as big of a Weber critic as anybody, but Meyers looked like a baby giraffe on ice out there his freshman year. Obvious talent, but not a basketball player yet.

While there are a lot of redeeming things I like about Coach Weber, I recall a game against Wisconsin, when Leonard was a sophomore, where I could practically read a comicbook-like thought bubble over Bo Ryan's head where Ryan was amazed, astounded, and thankful at how much time Leonard spent at the top of the key, and that Ryan himself would have had Leonard positioned way down lower were he a Wisconsin player.

I love the misplaced hate for Weber. He was guilty of many things, but misusing Leonard isn't one of them. Leonard was temperamental and like many freshmen, lost most of the time. He was not ready for big minutes. Period.

There was a quote from Mack that he could talk about Ramey and Simmons because they are not recruting them. Which begs the question, what if Ramey really WAS interested in Louisville? Would they have to bow out? Would the NCAA do anything?
maybe Mack rec'd a silent verbal from Ramey. Mack is not actively recruiting him but he knows they have Ramey in the bag.
