I love the misplaced hate for Weber. He was guilty of many things, but misusing Leonard isn't one of them. Leonard was temperamental and like many freshmen, lost most of the time. He was not ready for big minutes. Period.

Just to be clear, I never have hated Coach Weber. He ran a clean program, would have gotten us to the mountaintop in 2005 but for those eastern-accented officials who made dubious foul calls against Augustine and Ingram, and is clearly a good man who is better at X's and O's than at schmoozing NCAA officials or recruits. I am glad for his recent successes, as my prior posts state. I reiterate that I was not impressed with how Leonard was used as a sophomore, and would wager that if you asked Bo Ryan after a couple of beverages he would tell you the same. Tisdale, who certainly tried hard, seemed positioned far away from the rim even in his 4th year.

Name the last true Big (we'll arbitrarily say 6'9" or taller) we had who played well as a freshman. Meyers? Kiiinda. Augie? Brian Cook? It's not like we have ANY record of bigs coming in and being productive in Year 1. Usually not until Year 3. But suddenly we're tossing Matic out because in his 70 total minutes he didn't look good.

I'm not saying he'll be great, but there's no way we can evaluate him at this point. Actually, one thing we DO know about him is that he can shoot, at least in practice. That's not a skill that everyone develops.

I 100% agree with you, I think Ebo is going to be huge for this team and that Matic will eventually find the confidence and play his game. Lots to like about this team going forward, it's going to take time. You would think illini fans would be more patient....75% of them are Cubs fans (Cards fan here)....took them awhile too, they just needed the right leadership and the right pieces.

Underwood could also be fired in two years, or have bailed to Kansas State or wherever, there is never coaching certainty, even though you're totally right about players committing to a coach.

If Boeheim was so certainly nearing the exit door, why did Mike Hopkins, his handpicked successor, bail for Washington?

It is more likely that Brad Underwood is at Illinois when Golden graduates than that Jim Boeheim is at Syracuse. I grant you that. But this difference is much more marginal than you're letting on.

Yeah, I don't think that'll be a decisive factor.

Lorenzo Romar managed to get really good recruits all the way to the end, even though he was an obvious dead-man-walking. Heck, even John Groce managed to get his first ever 5* at a time when most believed his seat was on fire. Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden continued to get elite recruits well into their late 70s and 80s. I don't think the longevity factor is decisive in very many cases.

I think Boeheim probably has 3-5 years left, unless Syracuse manages to get back into the top-10 and start competing at a national level again. Despite the Final Four a few years ago and this year's S16, Syracuse has been pretty mediocre during the regular season for the past 4 years. A few more sub-20-win seasons, and I imagine he'll look to hang it up. Which positions Hopkins well to come back to Syracuse.

Sorry Hummus but I'm a little confused on the Golden swiss army knife...is that just someone who you plug in to multiple slots as a backup or scenario based? you describe the wings(TJ and AG), the 4 (giorgi) the 5 (ebo, kane)....but the SAK (swiss army knife) sounds like a player that can come off bench for certain sets? pls explain.

Please for the love of God don't ask him to 'explain' anything. Needs an editor more than the Illini need an experienced 5.

Free Okoro article.
Weird quote.

https://247sports.com/college/oregon/Bolt/Francis-Okoro-Oregon-basketball-recruiting-117202471

"Now back at home, Okoro said Illinois and Purdue are trying to make in-home visits with him. "It is kind of just what it is. They asked to come and make an in-home visit. It'll be good, but it's just that, I guess. Nothing too big."

Definitely not an insider but he is Oregon’s to lose. Biggest play for UI here is the the Aunt and Uncle (ISU professors) to continue to push the value of a UI education vs. others.

And just because a kid is 7 foot doesn't make him an inside banger. Tisdale could shoot and hit 3's he got a little bit better at the inside game by the time he was a senior in fact he is very similar to Finke! Weber exploited his strengths. He did end up 2nd all time in shots blocked here. The game has changed hardly anyone uses a post up banger center anymore!!! Tisdale avg 10pts a game and 5-6 rebounds his last 3 yrs. I think over the last 6-7 yrs I'd take that for a center all day!

...compared to what Tevian shows, with a nice quick release, kind of like Trent. Tevian doesn't have a high release, but if he elevates and is quick, the lower release is okay. If you're lower, slower, and don't elevate on your jumper, things don't go well.

Malcom's shot was a bit low and he was a bit slow too, but it worked most of the time due to craftiness. I think Ayo (and Tevian) will take some time to adjust to the speed of defenses, but both have a jumper that isn't broken and just needs strength and skill to raise the release point.

On a slightly different note, I think Ayo is going to be awesome as a CG/SG here, handling the ball a lot but not the main implementer on offense.

I also won't care much about losing Okoro if we can snag Liddell. Hopefully can get one of those two.

Yeah- he sounds super excited.

Somehow Oregon swooped in and seems to be a clear leader.

The SAT was taken this week so I am guessing it must ACT. Would love to get Okoro but doesn’t sound great.

on needing a 5...I think we need a SAK ("swiss army knife" Golden) more than a 5.

I know this is meant as a hypothetical, but in my reality Josh Whitman has made big time hires and knows Illinois is building programs and cultures from the ground up. These hires are not a mistake constantly teetering on the brink. They and Josh are in for the long haul.

In S&C's defense, I don't think he was saying that Underwood is likely to be fired in two years. Only that it is technically possible.

Right. And being fired for losing is far from the only reason he might depart the job. Life is uncertain. This is why a good AD is always scanning the market and has a shortlist prepared no matter how entrenched their coaching situation seems.

If we lose Okoro to Oregon somebody in our staff dropped the ball. The only excuse is if behind the scenes the staff now prefer a big with more of shooting ability.

I mentioned it months ago that Okoro fit the bill for reclassification and this possibility should of not surprised the staff. Reasons I felt that he would either want 4 years of bball/education a year early or 4 years of bball(redshirt option) and 5 years of college education. Just didn't think another year of high school bball and education compared to what he could get at the college level (at UI) for both.

MainelyIllini

uh, Maine
There was a quote from Mack that he could talk about Ramey and Simmons because they are not recruting them. Which begs the question, what if Ramey really WAS interested in Louisville? Would they have to bow out? Would the NCAA do anything?

This part made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that. :thumb:
