A strange situation for sure.

I think he wasn't ready to commit and wanted to see what other options were open. I also think he had some hesitation about working with Rod Ward, who so strongly advocated for Tate to replace him. We wanted someone that wanted to be with us. I wish he would have come on board, but, from an administrative standpoint, I think we were better off finding the person that wanted to be at Illinois and excited about the opportunity. Honestly, I don't envy his stance on Indiana.

What NCAA rule would prevent a verbal commitment?

He was planning on taking his official visits in June/July and then announcing his commitment on his birthday in August.

The new period for recruits to take official visits runs from April 1st until late June. As he's not allowed to take official visits in July, he's going to take all of his official visits in the fall. This is what is pushing his verbal commitment date back.

Yes, and we should remember that we didn't make his top 10.

That doesn't mean Illinois can't be in his Top 6... :thumb:

I agree, but I want to temper expectations. His father has no interest in Illinois and makes that abundantly clear. I would love him to come aboard, but I wouldn't bet on it (actually, I would bet against it). I respect the father is looking out for his son and wants to support him to do the best thing. And here are some of his quotes:

"If this was a movie the Trinity kids would all go to the same school and win a national title. But it’s real life and each family has to do what’s best for them in the long run"

"Winning attracts kids to your program not cheesy edits and cornball tactics"

"The same schools offer the same kids from the same city. It’s business nothing personal"

I think we should be respectful of Marcus and his family. And be ready for him to not accept our offer. My concern is that when people get their hopes up, they get upset when kids don't choose us. And say inappropriate things and make inappropriate comments. We should already expect he is not coming along. We can keep showing love and we can keep pushing til the end. But just keep it clean and know that he is most likely going somewhere else.

I agree but in the end, its Marcus's decision, not his fathers. Odds are he is not coming, but we are going to be in play and should monitor the situation.
As far as being respectful...well I hope no one on here should have to be told that (I could be wrong). The Mizzery fans on twitter look ignorant enough that I would hope IL fans would not like to be seen in that same light.

Ouch. When you put in the perspective that we are at right now getting big time players out of state it doesn’t look to bad, but to the rest of the Big Ten when Minnesota is coming into your state and nabbing multiple Top 10 players it looks bad. In the overall picture not that big though.

You never know what a recruit is going to prioritize when picking a school (the NFL, winning a championship, immediate PT, etc..) but a homestate DB picking Minny is just weird! He never seemed interested in the O&B, but he definitely has offers from better programs.

Abraham, Byrd, Lovie, Hardy...I can't imagine there is a better group for a DB to learn from on how to get to the NFL:illinois:

PJ Fleck is a good recruiter. He is like a human version of Illinois on twitter.

That one sucks. I mean, we are sitting really well right now with our momentum but it always sucks to lose good in state players.

It’s almost like it’s harder to sell to in state guys because they are closer to us and are more familiar with our losing ways.

It only sucks if we lose jirehl Brock also

It only sucks if we don’t get a great class. I think Illinois recruits will take longer to win over than other state recruits. We haven’t been relevant in football in a long time and we have A long bad history in state.

Now the Spring football is done, I am wondering how many verbal commitments will actually come in. I feel like IL recruiting is like a big boulder on the top of a cliff just looking for that one...more....commitment.....that pushes us over the top and really make some national noise.

Optimistic view: Nubin's hometown is ~10 miles from Fleck's hometown, so it makes sense. And it's one recruit, tough to judge the implications.

Pessimistic view: Of all the suburbs, the West suburbs was Illinois' most successful recruiting ground (comparative to Iowa's dominance in other suburb areas) and now there is evidence that Fleck can go into that area and get a kid that seemed built for Lovie's defensive mantra.

Fleck rubs me the wrong way. He is like finger nails on a chalkboard for me.

A very good friend of mine played with Fleck at NIU. I haven't heard a good thing said about him whenever Flecks name is brought up.

That guy is the biggest phony on the planet. He's Articulate Tim Beckman.

That gives me flashbacks to the disastrous 670 the score interview with Beckman explaining his acronym W.I.N. "Whatever Is Necessary Today."

"Isn't that W.I.N.T"

What a day for Oklahoma. Secured commitments from the 3rd, 6th, and 210th ranked players at their spring game.
