I would smack my kid in the head if he chose to take an official to a school 45 minutes away from home if schools all across the country were recruiting him.
And I would hope that your dad would smack you on the head if you chose to not let your kid take an official despite being only 45 min away. Free transport to the school and back, meals, housing, entertainment, and I'm not sure if this is specific to an official or just my perception, but it seems like (at least in the Groce era) the Coach and recruit would be able to have a dedicated time to hear a deep pitch about how they might be used. Also, if they are on an unofficial, are they allowed to still workout? These things I don't know, but I do know that even if costs for my travel were still less, it doesn't change the fact that they could go and do things and be treated "special" that they might not otherwise take if they were on an unofficial. So not to be disingenuous, but even if it were next door and my kid had the opportunity to take an official, I would let them...saves me a few $ and seems to open up a better experience overall. My 2 cents.
