I would smack my kid in the head if he chose to take an official to a school 45 minutes away from home if schools all across the country were recruiting him.

And I would hope that your dad would smack you on the head if you chose to not let your kid take an official despite being only 45 min away. Free transport to the school and back, meals, housing, entertainment, and I'm not sure if this is specific to an official or just my perception, but it seems like (at least in the Groce era) the Coach and recruit would be able to have a dedicated time to hear a deep pitch about how they might be used. Also, if they are on an unofficial, are they allowed to still workout? These things I don't know, but I do know that even if costs for my travel were still less, it doesn't change the fact that they could go and do things and be treated "special" that they might not otherwise take if they were on an unofficial. So not to be disingenuous, but even if it were next door and my kid had the opportunity to take an official, I would let them...saves me a few $ and seems to open up a better experience overall. My 2 cents.

Okoro will take an official to Illinois.

Expecting it to be sometime shortly after the May 8 date when test scores are known so that he can commit on his visit after he officially reclassifies.

Mack comes in saying immediately he "doesn't fit his system." Then you have Underwood and Martin take lesser players despite having very little competition for their services and essentially take themselves out of the running in each case. And you are correct its a rumor, sorry, but the adidas affiliation and prior commitment to Louisville with Pitino draws a bit of attention. :noidea:

Funny this was rarely brought up when we were still hot on Ramey's trail.

I was responding because you made it seem like he's not picking Illinois because he hasn't taken an official visit here. Kids don't need to take official visits when they're just down the road, so him not taking an official visit yet doesn't mean he's not interested. It would make sense for him to take an official visit here if he isn't planning on using all 5, but I would imagine that he's been told to save the officials for schools that are further away until he's narrowed it down.

Recruits and their families usually talk a big game about taking all 5 visits to exotic faraway locales early in their processes and then quickly realize that it's exhausting to do all that, especially for schools you know you aren't interested in.

FWIW I second this. There is buzz in Central Illinois.

It probably makes sense for Okoro to reserve official visits for next year if he’s not sure yet whether he’ll be able to reclassify.

Agreed, but it's possible that he doesn't know when he'd be able to start school so he could very well end up using all 5.

Not sure I put much stock in something coming from the Spoon House. Now if it came from the Original Pancake House, well, then we got something...

Normally, I would ignore these comments, but Spoon House, in my what most would probably consider ignorant opinion, is actually one of my favorite on campus places to eat (though this comes from a person who thinks Maize is severely overrated).

Does getting Bryce stop us from snagging Okoro (obviously scholarship wise we only have 1 now)? I know BU has shown he's got the cojones to take whoever is willing first, but this might be an instance I would rather wait on Okoro and risk losing out on a guy like Golden.

No, will take both.

We should be thrilled to take both. Our cupboard is bare at big. We have room for major playing time on our roster for both. Now, that may complicate things for other guys on our roster.

The flood of Crystal Balls to Syracuse the past 48 hours and then a quick visit announcement to Illinois makes it seem like this is a "let's just check this other place out to make sure we feel solid about Syracuse" sort of visit, but we'll see.

No, will take both.

If Golden commits, and we're planning on keeping room for Okoro in '18, we need to Crean Matic right then, it would be an awful, cruel thing to do to leave him hanging around until mid-May without knowing if he has a scholarship here stuck halfway around the world from his home without his family.

The flood of Crystal Balls to Syracuse means he just took a visit there, and the "experts" are trying to be the first one to guess that he's going there so they get more "247 Points" or whatever. The longer they have a pick locked in before the kid's decision, the more "insider status" they get. And as soon as one person switches, it starts a chain reaction. Kind of a farce, like insiders on this board. :thumb:

I'm not saying that you're incorrect; I'm just saying that the Crystal Ball trends can't always be trusted.
