"Having a relationship with MIF increases our chances of landing a recruit, but having a relationship does not mean exclusivity as many think. Many top programs have strong relationships with MIF as well, and reality is that MIF needs those top programs more than they need UI right now. "

+1

We're not the only ones vying for top talent, and my sense is that people are wildly overestimating how our relationship with MIF plays out. Being "in" with MIF does not mean we get guys. It means we're in the mix. Every recruit will be a battle. When we lose out on a guy we're interested in, it doesn't mean MIF is against us.

When you look at top talent, it's competitive, and the higher up the food chain, the more extreme the competition. When you get into the top-25, or being up against programs like Kentucky/Duke/Kansas, we're still going to get cut more often than not.

Look for the July thread maybe? Guessing new thread because it’s August 1? ;)

I think it usually changes with the recruiting calendar posted above. Aug 1st-Sept 8th is "quiet period".

Guzzardo's in Lincoln Il. Beats any of the places I've had in Chicagoland.

I think this is the time of year we discuss our favorite pizza places in either Champaign/Urbana, St. Louis area or Chicagoland.

Either that or debate the definition of athleticism and why Larry Bird wasn't.

Well for St. Louis, you've gotta check out Blackthorn. It's deep-dish pizza, but I wouldn't call it Chicago style deep dish, which I think is highly overrated. But probably wanna get it for carry-out. Unless you like dim, grimy bars that plays a lot of hardcore metal.

That will indeed always be true. However, a really good recruiting coach will always be able to get better talent than the program deserves. Otherwise, you get caught in a vicious cycle waiting endlessly to the get much better (which requires better talent) in order to get that better talent. Bruce Weber had great early success (with Self's talented recruits), yet that great success on the court did not translate into recruiting benefits.

Still early in his tenure at UI, but in all honesty, I have not seen that special recruiting acumen from BU yet.

Love Blackthorn, Dewey's is one of my favorites too. Just stay away from Imo's or any "St Louis" style pizza

Imo's is awful. Not alll "St. Louis style" pizza is bad, though. I am quite fond of Fortel's, for example. I will meet you most of the way there and agree that most of it is crap, though.

Kahlil Whitney article just got published today regarding his top 8. He had some great things to say. https://www.d1circuit.com/news_article/show/938715

Q: You have set your first official visit for Kentucky. When will that take place and why did you decide to set this visit?
A: “That visit will be taking place from August 3rd through the 5th. Me and my family sat down and talked about it and we felt we should take the official visit to Kentucky first then go to the other visits. I will be visiting other schools in the future, but I don’t want to publicize them yet.”

I think this is a battle between Illinois and Kentucky. Just like Ayo's recruitment with Illinois and Wake Forest. MIF, Ayo, and Marri doing all they can to help us out.

Encouraging statements by KW regarding future visits after UK.

They’ve redone the inside. I wouldn’t call it dim or grimy. I’m not sure about the metal though.
