New rules will allow schools to host 28 official visits in a 2-year span.. An increase from 24.

I always like to find a website where a new NCAA rule is shown and I found that website for the new rule changing the number of official visits from 24 to 28 in a rolling two-year period.

Here's a link to that NCAA website:

http://www.ncaa.org/about/flexibility-going-pro-and-getting-degree

The change from 24 to 28 official visits is mentioned in the paragraph labeled "More chances to visit colleges during and after high school."

The link says this kicks in on Aug. 15. Anybody know whether we get the full 28 starting Aug. 15 or just the additional 4 plus whatever we might have under the old rules?

Wouldn't that be "an Illinois rule"?

So far we have the “Can’t host your own regional”, the “video review of possession in the last two minutes” and now the “here, have some more visits, idiot” rules... Is that the full collection of Illinois Rules?

Don't we have a rule about former Governors going to jail...

We also have a replay rule for football fumbles.

TBH this is as it should be. Don't punish players for testing the waters and let them get honest feedback. That said, the NBA pre-draft combines just got a whole lot more interesting and a lot more college teams will be sweating come draft time...

Does this mean coaches will have to recruit through an agent? The agents show up at practices and games? Or am I reading this wrong? (Guess I wait for an actual article)

There is going to be a lot of pressure on coaches. How do you fill out your roster when you don't even know who is available until Mid June? I would expect there will be some changes in the recruiting rules to follow.

You forgot that we can't get top 15 talent to commit to Illinois basketball. Not even sure it's allowed.

I e-mailed someone at the U of I NCAA compliance office and asked that person how the recent rule change regarding the official visits was going to work.

Here's that reply:

Good afternoon,

Yes, in the short time since I last contacted you the rule has changed! That happens…anyway, here is the guidance I gave to our coaching staff. The NCAA may send out additional clarification before the new rule goes into effect, but with the limited information available to us now this is how we will proceed.

With the adoption of NCAA Proposal 2018-25 yesterday (Effective Date 8/15/18), please be advised that the rolling two-year period does not “reset,” but rather you are permitted to increase this year’s visit total from 9 to 13 to account for the new limit of 28 official visits in a rolling two-year period. Next year’s official visit limit will be determined by the number of official visit used this year between August 1, 2018 – July 31, 2019, and the total from the two-year rolling period of 2018-19 & 2019-20 will not exceed 28 official visits.

So now we know how many official visits (13) the coaches have to give out for the current recruiting period of 2018-19.

Banana, I'd still prefer the baseball/hockey model where the athlete can choose a career path of sports, albeit through the minor leagues, or if they are good enough, jump right to the bogs. The other alternative wold be college athletics with all the limitations that imposes, with the understanding the primary goal is an education, not preps for the big leagues.

The probability of a male high school athlete going on to participate in Division 1 basketball in the US today is 1%, and 2.7% for football (http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/research/estimated-probability-competing-college-athletics). Just 1.2% and 1.6% respectively of those go on to the professional ranks in basketball and football. In all major men's sports having a significant professional opportunity, just 3.2% go on the professional sports at any level. I see the larger problem being the NBA and the NBAPA. They don't want the responsibility of setting up a minor league system like baseball and hockey have done, successfully I might add. But that's just me - and I shudder when I think about all the calls to pay the players . . . . that's what the pros do. College athletics (at least in my very old-school mind) should be about playing sports while pursuing an education, with the education being the primary goal - period.
