Silver/gray is still "in". Doubt we wont have that as an alternative. We only play a game or two every year in them anyways. It's a (mostly) millennial thing.

I think they are interesting, and it's at least partly a recruiting tool, but wearing them only twice a year or so is the right move.

I hope with the new set whenever it gets announced, you can find jerseys available for fans to purchase. I think they are missing out on $$$/marketing having these available. I would love to get my son a white Fighting Illini jersey to wear around Iowa City

I personally hate the throwback script lettering. Unless we go WAY back and use Blackletter or something...

Want to get your son beat up, huh? 😀

I went to Iowa-Illinois football and basketball games in Iowa City in all my Illini gear many times and was verbally (and even physically by drunk a holes) attacked by many Hawkeye morons. Never back down though....

I've been able to go to every Basketball and Football game in Iowa City since I moved out here 12 years ago. I have never had a problem. 6'5" 250 might help me out. That 7-year gap in football games may have helped out too.
The real sad part is how sympathetic people are. "Hang in there, Illinois will be good again someday" hurts way more than the punch.

Yeah. 6-5 would help. I'm 5-8 170. I lived in Iowa city from '79-'94. My main issue was walking to games having drunk students attacking me with verbal insults and even on occasion coming at me. Just made me hate Hawkeye fans even more!! Glad to hear no issue for you....and hopefully your son too. 👍

Colorado is definitely the best evidence of a long-term success story for a program-specific font. They did that before it was cool and a couple decades down the line it's very recognizably "them".

Collar is a little bit out there, but overall it's a clean look. I'd be happy if ours are similar.

I'm cautiously optimistic. The FIGHTING ILLINI throwbacks were an absolute homerun, and I think there is at least a snowball's chance that they give a nod to that type of uniform with the new ones. They will obviously use the new rebrand font (which I quite like), but I am hopeful ILLINI will appear on one of them.

Since you wanted to use the new font, I've fixed your post.

Refresher from the re-brand in 2014:

TYPOGRAPHY - PRIMARY

fightingillini-wordmark.jpg
illinois-wordmark.jpg

To assist in creating a consistent look for a wide variety of athletic communications, a full alphabet and custom wordmarks for "Illinois" and "Fighting Illini" have been designed to enhance the overall brand. The oblique letterforms are inspired by the speed and elusive lateral movements synonymous with Red Grange, one of the most celebrated athletes in Illinois Athletics history. In the primary execution, the letters incorporate both of the brand's primary colors, which is unique in the world of intercollegiate athletics. The split color design nods to the concept of duality in the school's motto, "Learning and Labor," and represents the state of Illinois as a crossroads between East and West.

TYPOGRAPHY - SECONDARY

frutiger.jpg

The sans-serif typeface Frutiger was selected to complement the primary identity. Frutiger is a sans-serif typeface designed by the Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger. The result is a distinctive and legible typeface that maintains a modern appearance and legibility at various angles, sizes, and distances.

We're told no split color design with the upcoming uni's, which should provide a cleaner look. People seem to agree this is a positive. But it seems the font could remain the same, to stay consistent with the brand across athletics. I would be in favor of a different font, either of the secondaries would be fine (with no outline).

So, does Nike create and have the final say in the design? Just curious. We don't have a group of undergraduate design majors (if there is such a thing) working feverishly in a basement somewhere burning the midnight oil trying to come up with an acceptable concept? But seriously, doesn't BU or Whitman or someone have the final say on what Nike might come up with?

The basic bones of the uniform in terms of the fabrics and the way it's constructed is a Nike template, and then in terms of adding color or striping or lettering or whatever, Illinois can choose whatever they want.

The Clemson, USC, and Colorado uniforms on the last couple of pages are all the exact same fabric-wise, and all indications are that we're moving to that template as well, but there's a lot of room for customization as you can see.

Nike basically works with their schools as consultants. The schools own the design and can pretty much do whatever they want.

I actually like Colorado’s uniforms, but I’m not that picky when it comes to how they look.

As long as they don’t look like those god awful adidas uniforms Wisconsin wore during their Championship game run, I’ll be happy.

Seriously, the top stripe on the shorts was terrible. I assume the person who made RC Cola their preferred vendor at Camp Randall designed their uniforms.
