been a fan of the Illini for over 60 years since throwing a deflated BB thru a net less rim nailed to a wooden backboard nailed to a tree....before that my grandma used to roll up tape into a ball and tape a bottomless cardboard box to the wall.....so being a fan this long I have the patience to follow the Illini every year hoping for the best and cussing at the worst...It's my enthusiasm as a fan to ride the ups ( 1989 and 2005) and the downs (to many to number) that I follow my Illini and ride this MF'in rollercoaster called college athletics....I live in KY and have heard fans of UK and Lville state " hell yeah, cheat and do whatever it takes to win "....NOT MY STYLE !!!!!!!!!!!

Some truths we must accept

Shoe companies will push recruits to KU, UK, Duke, UNC, Oregon. Possibly Arizona and Louisville.

NCAA will not or can't punish the group listed above.

Coaches, boosters will push or break rules at schools listed above due to #1 and 2. These schools also have legacy, facilities, and success to compete against.

Our ability to land the 35-100 instate recruit is far from automatic. Despite his recruiting misses Weber recruited this group well. Pruitt. Egwu, Mcamey, Leonard, Shaw, Tisdale, Richmond, a couple others instate and midwest.

Often takes 3+ years to establish ties and recruiting ties, looks like BU will require every bit of that time.

Must win, go to NCAA, send players to NBA. Which one of those have we done well in the last 10 years?

We are in rebuild, hopefully on the upswing of this cycle.

Reading your post, I think I'm quite younger than you, but not young by any means. I can relate to what you're saying. One thing that bothers me, if I look at it objectively and not as just an Illini fan, is that cheating these days isn't something you can just choose to do and jump into. It seems as though if you're not in there already, you're not going to break into the circle.

It's a circle I want no part of...I remember reading the newspaper accounts of the slush fund fiasco and hurting inside that my favorite team was guilty of trying to cheat to win....I'm no angel by any stretch but college sports was not a job like the pro's but a privilege and it's rewards were a free college education along with celebrity status as a BMOC.
Now its about handlers and OV's and AAU and annoucements on video, live tv, twitter etc... Seems as professional as the pro's and demeans the true definition of college sports...

We’ve lost every recruit this signing period including one kid who would prefer to walk-on at Miznoz. Color me concerned.

I think way too much is made of the Mizzou walk on. First of all, he wasn't particularly good and could probably read the writing on the wall that his path to starter status would be unlikely. Second, he was a Mizzou legacy, so if he was going to ride pine somewhere, it might as well be the family school.

I think we we're really only committing him to have a better shot at his brother (who recently committed to Kansas), and the fact that he just happened to play a position of need was bonus.

We are a society that always want immediate gratification. I am sure BU and coaches are trying their hearts out in recruiting. Last year at this time the sky was falling and the recruiting class we ended up with were an upgrade to what we had to many components on the court. I am confident when all is said and done we will again have a decent recruiting class that will point the arrow up. The objective is to win games and there a number of ways to get that done besides having top 50 recruits. Once that is accomplished, in making the tournament, I think you will see more top 50 player seeing us in a better light. I don't think that is that far off.
Although I agree with the first sentence and think we need to calm down in regards to our inability to land these top 50 recruits. OT picked WVU over UK. We were in Top 4 and maybe even Final 2? Pretty good when you consider we have sucked so bad for so long compared to most programs in on these Top 50’s. BU is getting their attention for sure.

Where I share the concern of many others on this board is that last year BU and staff were fighting an uphill battle as they were last to the party. But, for 2019 recruits, however, we could very well be the only B10 program without a fall commit and class could be made up of entirely 150+ ranked recruits. Tough to argue this isn’t cause for concern because regardless of what was just previously posted, our current roster needs talent added in 19, 20 and 21 classes to ensure we build this program for future success. I think that is what BU is trying to do, but he needs to close a few of these guys eventually.

Please ignore my fat finger typos in the last post. I can't cell phone effectively.

I wouldn’t be so concerned about that particular scenario had we been able to land Golden, Okoro, Whitney, or any of the latest wave of whiffs. Grouped in with all of that, his choosing to walk-on over being under scholarship at UofI looks a bit worse. I mean, good lord, I hope his family is financially secure at least.

I'm glad you're not the coach!
I would have as many recruits signed during the fall signing period as the current one. Seriously, I’m not even trying to be negative but the current revenue sports are abysmal right now. I’m basically coming here to vent and for therapy. Off topic but it doesn’t help that I’m an ‘04 grad and was on campus for the golden era of basketball and the Kittner Sugar Bowl team.

I don't believe you'd have any signed, although I know its easy for you to say that and helps you spread your point. But, I don't believe it.

No, I would not have any signed. You are correct. My point is that the current staff doesn’t have any signed during this current signing period. It would be a net wash...

Any chance Shannon is on pause with announcing due to wanting to see what other players commit as well? Wouldn't be that far of a stretch to think he may want to see who he will be running with?
