Jeff Albert has been hired as hitting coach. He came over from the Astros as he's been their assistant hitting coach over the last few years. Stubby Clapp promoted to First Base Coach as well. Let the offseason begin.
I am going to find it very hard rooting against the Cardinals when they have a base coach named Stubby Clapp.

I have a new first choice for Cubs manager when Maddon retires.

I am starting to get on the Harper bandwagon. I am getting sucked into believing that it could happen. It's just money, and with the youth in the pipeline and on the field, the Cards could certainly afford it. Especially, if they can get a 4 your opt out, instead of 3. He would be approaching 30 and would likely be offered an Albert type deal from someone and he would be off the Cards books, after we get his prime.

They're only going to be at payroll of ~$135MM with no moves (just arbitration). That's $25MM below last years opening payroll, and they were going to add Stanton last year. Beat writer Gould say they were comfortable going up to (but not passing) the luxury tax last year, which was $195MM. So they're $60MM below that as it stands... they could add Harper and Donaldson without even moving Fowler's dead money!

You add that payroll room to the comments from Mozeliak about missing that "star player" and "88 wins just isn't enough", and the glaring hole in the OF when Ozuna is gone after 2019 and it's almost like we should expect them to sign Harper!

I am not expecting Harper to be a Cardinal. But I really hope to be proven wrong with that.

Yea I'm just joking about expecting them to do it, definitely a long shot.

The most likely scenario for the 4 highest paid players in this FA class:

Harper -> Dodgers
Machado -> Phillies
Corbin -> Yankees
Donaldson -> Cardinals

Couple more Cardinals related moves today:

-Outrighted C Francisco Pena
-Reds claim RP Matt Bowman off waivers
I was about to post this too. Both moves make sense. I’m curious if we pick up another catcher. IMO it would make the most sense to have Kelly in that spot. I know they liked him playing everyday (in the minors) but his bat can be used in pinch situations. Plus, there is real value for him to interact with Molina and learn from the GOAT.

If it's not gonna be Kelly, then you need to trade either him or Knizer.

The cubs are apparently open to trading Kris Bryant. hmmm... interesting...

Don’t buy it. Theo said that no one is untouchable and he also said Byrantbis the type of player teams want to add, not subtract, Cubs included. Having said that, if someone blew their doors off with an offer, I am sure they’d consider it.

What makes it interesting is the issue he and Boras has regarding when he was brought up to the bigs.

Not a big enough splash for demanding Cardinals fans.

Probably not, but Donaldson + Kikuchi (Japanese lefty starter) + potentially swinging a James Paxton trade with the Mariners probably makes the team better than just Harper and nothing else for the same amount of $/year.

There's not much else through FA that will really move the team forward outside Harper or Donaldson, except for Corbin/ Kuechel/ Machado, but they don't fit as well. They're a team full of 2-3 win players that desperately needs the 5 win guy, there's really no huge holes to fill.

You have a laundry list of upgrades and the need for left handed power but follow up by saying we have no major holes. That doesn’t square.

I’m looking for a lot and expecting little. I’d love Goldschmidt at first and an upgrade at third. That means trading Carp. I’d like a top flight starter. I see Carlos coming out of the pen. I’m not crazy about Waino taking up a roster spot. I don’t want to spend big on Harper or Manny.

We need to win an offseason like Milwaukee did last year.

Former Cardinal Aledmys Diaz has been traded once again. This time from Toronto to Houston for a minor league pitcher.

Move gives the Astros some insurance in case Marwin Gonzalez signs elsewhere in free agency.

He was a good kid. I hope he felt nds a good landing spot and can be an everyday guy

I wasn't a fan of the blue in the 80s and I am not a fan today. STL Inc can do as they see fit. I am sure having an extra jersey means more sales. Good for them.
My issue is St Louis' colors are white and RED not blue. Every time I see the blue jersey it makes me think they are envious and want to be KC or Cubbie lite.

That’s fair. For me personally, it’s nostalgic. I think of Ozzie. The baby blues makes me think of whitey-ball.

The Cardinals' primary color IS red. In fact, that's where the name "Cardinals" came from. But dark blue has been their second color for years and years. For example, they have worn dark blue hats in the past, and still wear them sometimes on the road and always at home with a red bill on Sundays. Maybe baby ("victory") blue isn't the best, but it sure beats pink! :)
