I think the O/B/O is traditional enough in its own right that our "default home jersey" needs to be some variation of that color scheme. Whatever we do with the helmet (arched "ILLINI," block I, whatever), the numbers (outline, no outline, whatever), etc., I think O/B/O and O/W/O need to be "defaults." Taking next year's schedule, this is what I would want:

O/B/O vs. Akron
O/W/O at UConn
O/B/O vs. Eastern Michigan
O/B/O vs. Nebraska
O/W/O at Minnesota
O/B/O vs. Michigan
O/B/W Throwbacks vs. Wisconsin (Homecoming)
O/W/O at Purdue
O/B/O vs. Rutgers
O/W/O at Michigan State
O/W/O at Iowa
B/B/W vs. Northwestern

I think we should wear our default home and away jerseys with orange helmets and pants as often as reasonably possible. This is a very new opinion of mine, but I want Illinois to have a clear identity. Even when a school like Tennessee or Nebraska or even Kansas State is down/bad, people have a certain respect for their look. Those schools know who they are. There are really only two regular variations we should throw out there, IMO:

1) Homecoming: wear the throwbacks we wore vs. EIU in 2008. They're awesome, period. Make that our Homecoming jersey every single year, why not?

2) Northwestern Game: Look. Like. The. Bears. Throw our connection with the Bears in Northwestern's face every single year. When we play them in Champaign, wear B/B/W. When we play them in Evanston, wear B/W/B. Every once in a while, throw in B/O/W for the alternates (not sure on methodology for this).

All blue, all orange and all white should meet their demise, it pains me to say. Wishful thinking and all, but this would be my preference.

My name is Will [redacted], and I approve this list.

Numbers for sure!

Can someone explain the appeal of that?

To me that would be tantamount to putting "Gators" on the side of our helmets. I understand that 50 years ago that was common, but it is completely Alabama's thing now.

What confuses me even more is the way some schools will put numbers on as part of a try-hard Ed Hardy looking asymmetrical design with a giant distorted logo on the other side.

Because it looks better than anything else we currently have available for a helmet sticker.

I'm flipping around to a bunch of games this afternoon, and I've gotta say, I am just bored to tears of all the mix-and-match colors and helmet finishes and special helmet stickers and all the other random ephemera.

I was never a fan of the Alabama and Penn State type nostalgia looks. I still don't think those are the best dressed teams around. But they are now the ones making a fashion statement and standing out from the pack, not the other way around.
